This has left wildlife activists in India shocked and outraged.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Why is India Concerned?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Firstly, the Grassland Habitat in Pakistan&#8217;s Cholistan desert <\/strong>is very similar to the habitat in Rajasthan\u2019s Desert National Park(DNP). Where the Great Indian Bustard(GIB) was killed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Secondly<\/strong>, in these areas, the last remaining populations of\u00a0 Great Indian Bustard reside.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thirdly, Rajasthan shares the international border with Pakistan&#8217;s <\/strong>Sindh and Punjab provinces. The remaining Indian-bred GIBs may also fly across to Pakistan&#8217;s desert and become easy prey for the gun-toting poachers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hence, the hunting of the GIB <\/strong>will not only drastically reduce India\u2019s GIB population but will also affect the desert ecosystem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note: The hunting of the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-houbara-bustard\/\"><strong>Houbara bustards<\/strong><\/a><strong> in Pakistan <\/strong>has also led to an alarming decline in their numbers. In India, the population confines mostly to Rajasthan and Gujarat.\n<ul>\n<li>In Rajasthan also GIB\u2019s population is less than 100. This accounts for 95% of its total world population.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>State Bird: <\/strong>GIB is the State bird of Rajasthan.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conservation Status:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>IUCN Red List: <\/strong>Critically Endangered<\/li>\n<li><strong>CITES<\/strong>: Appendix I<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wildlife (Protection) Act,1972<\/strong>: Schedule I<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Threats: <\/strong>The bird under constant threat due to a) Collision\/ electrocution with power transmission lines b) Hunting (still prevalent in Pakistan) c) Irrigation and farming technology among others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Initiatives for Protection of GIB:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Great Indian Bustard Project: <\/strong>It was launched by the Rajasthan Government.
