UK Variant is the cause of the Current COVID-19 surge in Delhi.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Who conducted the study?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/double-mutant-covid-virus-variant-found\/\"><strong>Indian SARS-CoV-2 Consortium on Genomics(INSACOG) <\/strong><\/a>has conducted <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/answered-what-do-you-understand-by-the-term-genome-sequencing-discuss-its-importance-and-associated-challenges-wrt-genome-sequencing-in-india\/\">Genome Sequencing <\/a>of around 15,000 samples. It is about 1% of India&#8217;s coronavirus caseload.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Key Findings from the study:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Firstly, Variants of Concern(VoC):<\/strong> The relative proportion of known <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/double-mutant-covid-virus-variant-found\/\">Variants of Concern or VoC<\/a> (the U.K., South Africa, Brazil variants) is around 11% of the sequenced samples.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>VoC<\/strong> is a category used during the initial assessment of a newly emerged variant of a virus. Before this, an emerging variant may have been labeled a &#8220;variant of interest&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Secondly, The proportion of the U<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/how-should-india-handle-the-new-virus-variants\/\"><strong>K. variant (B.1.1.7)<\/strong><\/a> in the samples sequenced from Delhi increased to 50% from 28% in the 2nd week of March.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The UK variant <\/strong>has a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mutation N501Y<\/span>. It increases the transmission of the virus leading to increased disease severity and mortality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thirdly, there was also a rise<\/strong> <strong>in the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/double-mutant-covid-virus-variant-found\/\"><strong>Indian variant <\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/double-mutant-covid-virus-variant-found\/\">(B.1.617)<\/a>.
