{"id":104411,"date":"2021-05-03T11:53:08","date_gmt":"2021-05-03T06:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=104411"},"modified":"2021-05-03T11:53:59","modified_gmt":"2021-05-03T06:23:59","slug":"armenian-genocide-recognised-by-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/armenian-genocide-recognised-by-the-us\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Armenian Genocide&#8221; recognised by the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>What is the News?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The US President has officially recognised the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks in 1915-16 as an act of genocide.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>What is Genocide?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Raphael Lemkin,<\/strong> the Polish lawyer has coined the term \u201cgenocide\u201d in 1943.<\/li>\n<li><strong>According to Article II of the UN Convention on Genocide of December 1948, <\/strong>Genocide has been described as carrying out acts intended to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"content-box-red\">\n<h5><strong>What is the Armenian Genocide?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Armenian Genocide<\/strong> is often called the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">first genocide of the twentieth century<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It refers to the systematic annihilation of Armenians<\/strong> living in the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1917 i.e. during the First World War.<\/li>\n<li><strong>According to estimates, <\/strong>approximately 1.5 million Armenians died. This is due to genocide, either massacre and killings, or from ill-treatment, abuse and starvation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Armenian diaspora<\/strong> marks April 24 as <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/armenian-genocide-recognised-by-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Armenian Genocide<\/a> Remembrance Day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h5><strong>Significance of Acknowledgment by US:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>The acknowledgement by the US government would have a little legal impact on Turkey. It will only cause an embarrassment for Turkey. The US acknowledgement perhaps provides impetus to other countries for acknowledging the genocide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Turkey\u2019s stand:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Turkey has acknowledged that atrocities were committed against Armenians. But it denies it as a genocide. This is because, genocide will come with legal implications. Further, Turkey has also challenged the estimates that 1.5 million were killed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>India\u2019s stand:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>India has not formally recognised the Armenian Genocide.
