{"id":104938,"date":"2021-05-04T17:16:29","date_gmt":"2021-05-04T11:46:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=104938"},"modified":"2021-05-05T11:37:43","modified_gmt":"2021-05-05T06:07:43","slug":"putola-nach-assamese-string-puppetry-used-in-the-covid-19-awareness-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/putola-nach-assamese-string-puppetry-used-in-the-covid-19-awareness-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Putola Nach&#8221;: Assamese string puppetry used in the Covid-19 awareness campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What is the News?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>An Assam-based trust is promoting string puppetry called <strong>Putola Nach, amid <\/strong>the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/div>\n<p>Anamika Ray Memorial Trust(ARMT), an Assam-based trust in collaboration with UNICEF-Assam has produced three short videos using <strong>Putola Nach puppetry.<\/strong> These stories aim to create mass awareness of Covid-19 appropriate behaviour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Putola Nach:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Firstly, Putola Nach<\/strong> is string puppetry of Assam. &#8216;Putul&#8217; is a word that describes both a doll and a puppet in Bengali while the word &#8216;Naach&#8217; means Dance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Secondly, <\/strong>the puppetry is performed in three areas with distinct characteristics. These areas are:\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>First area &#8211; Lower Assam: <\/strong>Here this puppetry form is known as Putala-Bhoariya and influenced by the popular folk form Bhoariya.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The second area &#8211; Majuli island (Upper Assam): <\/strong>Here small wooden puppets are used in the style of the Ankia Naat. (Anika Naat is an act developed by Sankaradev).<\/li>\n<li><strong>The third area is North Assam: <\/strong>Here the puppeteers use Bangla, Assamese and Karbi songs in their performances. These are largely borrowed from the mobile theatre of Assam (Bhraymaman).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thirdly, <\/strong>the puppetry includes the <strong>episodes<\/strong> of the Ramayana, as well as scenes from the Mahabharata.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Further<\/strong>, the puppeteers also add dialogues or chants taken from bhaona (the local traditional theatre of Assam).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>String Puppetry:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India has a rich and ancient tradition of string puppets also known as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">marionettes<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>The puppets in this form have jointed limbs, controlled by strings allowing for more flexibility.
