{"id":106305,"date":"2021-05-11T15:45:50","date_gmt":"2021-05-11T10:15:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=106305"},"modified":"2021-05-13T10:52:53","modified_gmt":"2021-05-13T05:22:53","slug":"who-classifies-indian-variant-as-variant-of-concern","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/who-classifies-indian-variant-as-variant-of-concern\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO classifies Indian variant as &#8220;Variant of Concern&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>What is the News? <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The World Health Organization has classified the B.1.617 (variant first identified in India in 2020) as a <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/who-classifies-indian-variant-as-variant-of-concern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Variant of Concern(VoC)<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Variant Classifications: <\/strong>Variants of a virus have one or more mutations that differentiate it from the other variants that are in circulation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Types<\/strong>: US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classifies variants into three categories:<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Variant of Interest(VOI): <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>A variant is classified as Variant of Interest, based on the following possible attributes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Firstly, Associated with changes <\/strong>to receptor binding<\/li>\n<li><strong>Secondly, Reduced neutralization<\/strong> by antibodies generated against previous infection or vaccination<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thirdly, Reduced efficacy<\/strong> of treatments<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fourthly, Potential<\/strong> diagnostic impact<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lastly, A predicted increase <\/strong>in transmissibility or disease severity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Variant of Concern(VoC): <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>A variant is classified as Variant of Concern if there is any evidence of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Increase<\/strong> in transmissibility<\/li>\n<li><strong>More severe disease<\/strong> (e.g. increased hospitalizations or deaths)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significant reduction in neutralization by antibodies <\/strong>generated during previous infection or vaccination<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reduced effectiveness of treatments<\/strong> or vaccines or diagnostic detection failures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>The most frequent Variant of Concern(VOC) named by WHO by their geography of origin are<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018U.K. variant\u2019 for B.1.1.7;<\/li>\n<li>\u2018South Africa variant\u2019 for B.1.351;<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Brazil variant\u2019 for P.1. and<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Indian Variant\u2019 for B.1.617<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Variants of High Consequence<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>This is classified<\/strong> when there is clear evidence that prevention measures or medical countermeasures do not work on curbing the virus compared to other variants.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Currently, there are no SARS-CoV-2 variants<\/strong> that rise to the level of high consequence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/international\/who-says-covid-variant-in-india-of-concern\/article34529654.ece\"><strong>The Hindu<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"URpt2XV03Y\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/what-are-variants-of-concern-voc\/\">What are &#8220;Variants of Concern&#8221; (VoC)?<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;What are &#8220;Variants of Concern&#8221; (VoC)?&#8221; &#8212; Free UPSC IAS Preparation For Aspirants\" src=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/what-are-variants-of-concern-voc\/embed\/#?secret=YgcM87JH8R#?secret=URpt2XV03Y\" data-secret=\"URpt2XV03Y\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
