International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN) has released a report titled \u201cNature in a Globalised World: Conflict and Conservation\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>About the Nature in a Globalised World Report:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
    \n
  • The report <\/strong>focuses on complex relationships between nature and the armed conflict.<\/li>\n
  • Objective<\/strong>: The objective is to bring nature conservation into the mainstream of economic and political decision-making.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
    Key Findings of the Nature in a Globalised World Report:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
      \n
    • Armed Conflicts <\/strong>have numerous negative effects on nature. These include:<\/strong>\n
        \n
      • Direct killing of wildlife for food or trade<\/li>\n
      • Degradation of ecosystems as both a tactic and a consequence of war<\/li>\n
      • Disruption of conservation, e.g. through attacks on protected area staff and other conservationists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Greater conflict risk: <\/strong>The report gave examples about the impact on a range of species from conflicts:\n
          \n
        • During the 1994 war<\/strong> in Rwanda, 90% of the large mammals in the Akagera National Park were killed for food or trade.<\/li>\n
        • The Vietnam War <\/strong>almost certainly accelerated the extinction of the Javan rhinoceros.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
        • Further, the report has found that armed conflicts<\/strong> are particularly prevalent in some of the more biodiverse regions of the world.<\/li>\n
        • Moreover, civil unrest and military exercises<\/strong> pose a risk to more than 200 Endangered species. This includes even the iconic species such as the Critically Endangered Eastern gorilla.<\/li>\n
        • However, <\/strong>conflicts were less frequent within the boundaries of the natural reserves and other protected areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \u00a0<\/strong>Recommendations of the Nature in a Globalised World: <\/strong><\/h5>\n

          The report has recommended a series of suggestions such as:<\/p>\n

            \n
          • Strengthening the natural resource<\/strong> governance through measures like inclusive decision-making<\/li>\n
          • Improving accountability<\/strong> and transparency<\/li>\n
          • Recognising the rights of indigenous peoples <\/strong>and of women<\/li>\n
          • Establishment of explicit protections<\/strong> for protected area staff, environmental defenders and other conservationists and<\/li>\n
          • Sanctions <\/strong>against those who commit environmental war crimes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
