The Prime Minister has paid tribute to freedom fighter Gopal Krishna Gokhale on his Birth Anniversary.<\/p>\n

About Gopal Krishna Gokhale:<\/strong><\/h5>\n

  • Gopal Krishna Gokhale<\/strong>(1866 \u20131915) was an Indian liberal political leader and a social reformer during the Indian Independence Movement. He was born on 9 May 1866<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
    Contributions of Gopal Krishna Gokhale:<\/strong><\/h5>\n

    Role in Indian a National Congress(INC):<\/strong><\/p>\n

    • Gokhale became a member of the Indian National Congress(INC) in 1889.<\/li>\n
    • He was a member of the Moderate Group of Indian National Congress.<\/li>\n
    • He became president of INC in 1905 in the Banaras session.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Role in Legislatures:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      • In 1899, Gokhale was elected to the Bombay Legislative Council.<\/li>\n
      • He was also elected to the Imperial Council of the Governor-General of India in 1901.<\/li>\n
      • He also played a key role in framing the Morley-Minto reforms of 1909.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        • Firstly, he served as Secretary of the Deccan Education Society<\/span>.<\/li>\n
        • Secondly, he established<\/span> the Servants of India Society<\/span> in 1905. This society trained people to be selfless workers so that they could work for the common good of the people.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Thirdly, Gokhale was a mentor to both Mohammed Jinnah and Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi even wrote a book called, \u2018Gokhale, My Political Guru<\/strong>\u2019.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Fourthly, in 1908, he founded the \u2018Ranade Institute of Economics<\/strong>\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          • He started an English weekly newspaper, The Hitavada<\/span> (The people\u2019s paper).<\/li>\n
          • Gokhale also published a daily newspaper Jnanaprakash<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
          • He has associations with the Sarvajanik sabha journal, which Govind Ranade started.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
