The event occurred ahead of a march by Zionist nationalists commemorating Israel\u2019s capture of the eastern half of the city in 1967.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Jerusalem Dispute:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jerusalem City<\/strong> has been at the centre of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.<\/li>\n<li><strong>According to the original 1947 UN partition plan,<\/strong> the proposal was to make Jerusalem an international city.<\/li>\n<li><strong>But during the first Arab Israel war of 1948, <\/strong>the Israelis captured the western half of the city. Similarly, Jordan took the eastern part including the Old City that houses Haram esh-Sharif.\n<ul>\n<li>Al-Aqsa Mosque is Islam\u2019s third-holiest site. Its location is on a plaza at the Temple Mount, which is known in Islam as Haram-esh-Sharif.<\/li>\n<li>The Temple Mount is also Judaism\u2019s holiest site.<\/li>\n<li>The Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall is sacred to Jews. This wall is one side of the retaining wall of the Al-Aqsa compound.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>However, <\/strong>Israel captured East Jerusalem from Jordan in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed it later.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Since its annexation<\/strong>, Israel has expanded settlements in East Jerusalem. At present, it is home to some 220,000 Jews.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jews born in East Jerusalem<\/strong> are Israeli citizens. The Palestinians in Jerusalem have conditional residency permits. But Palestinians in East Jerusalem, unlike other parts of the occupied West Bank, can apply for Israeli citizenship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Current Status of Jerusalem Dispute:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Israel<\/strong>: Israel considers a unified Jerusalem city as the capital of Israel.\n<ul>\n<li>This move has <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">never been internationally recognized<\/span> by most of the countries.
