{"id":10757,"date":"2019-10-09T17:51:01","date_gmt":"2019-10-09T12:21:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/factly.forumias.com\/?p=10757"},"modified":"2019-10-09T17:51:01","modified_gmt":"2019-10-09T12:21:01","slug":"national-nutrition-survey-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-nutrition-survey-2\/","title":{"rendered":"National Nutrition Survey"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> The Government\nof India has released the first-ever comprehensive National Nutrition Survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About the National\nNutrition Survey:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The survey has been conducted by the Ministry of\nHealth and Family Welfare and the United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) to\nmeasure malnutrition.<\/li><li>The survey recorded not only micronutrient\ndeficiencies but also details of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes,\nhypertension, cholesterol and kidney function in children and adolescents.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key takeaways from\nthe survey:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>National Level:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Nearly 10% of children in the age group of 5-9\nyears and adolescents in the age group of 10-19 years are pre-diabetic.<\/li><li>Further, 5% of the children and adolescents in\nthe same group are overweight and another 5% suffer from blood pressure.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Urban India:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Malnutrition among children in urban India is\ncharacterised by relatively poor levels of breastfeeding, higher prevalence of\niron and Vitamin D deficiency as well as obesity.<\/li><li>In rural India, there is higher percentage of\nchildren suffering from stunting, underweight and wasting and lower consumption\nof milk products.<\/li><li>83% of children between 12 and 15 months\ncontinued to be breastfed, a higher proportion of children in this age group\nresiding in rural areas are breastfed (85%) compared to children in urban areas\n(76%).Breastfeeding is inversely proportional to household wealth.<\/li><li>Children and adolescents residing in urban areas\nalso have a higher (40.6%) prevalence of iron deficiency compared to their\nrural counterparts (29%).<\/li><li>Children in urban areas are also overweight and\nobese as indicated by subscapular skinfold thickness (SSFT) for their age.<\/li><li>Wealthier households in urban areas and\nsedentary lifestyle of children may also be responsible for higher deficiency\nof Vitamin D in urban areas (19%) as compared to rural areas (12%).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rural India:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Among children aged 1-4 years, zinc deficiency\nis more common in rural areas (20%) compared to urban areas (16%).<\/li><li>Rural areas also witness higher prevalence of\nstunting (37% in rural versus 27% in urban), underweight (36% in rural versus\n26% in urban) and severe acute malnutrition (34.7% in rural areas for children\nin 5-9 years versus 23.7% in urban areas and 27.4% in urban areas for\nadolescents in 10-19 years versus 32.4% in rural areas).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional\ninformation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UNICEF<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>UNICEF stands for United Nations Children\u2019s\nFund.
