The system would be similar to the way tropical storms are named.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is the current method of naming Virus Strains?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Currently, WHO and other agencies across the world <\/strong>refer to viruses and their variants by formal lineage names. It is a combination of letters and names that point to the relationships between different variants.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Example: <\/strong>Variants such as B.1.1.7 and B.1.617 are named after mutations in common and as well clues to their evolutionary history.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geographical tag: <\/strong>The virus names and their associated diseases have also been frequently named after geographical places where outbreaks were first reported or samples first isolated.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Example<\/strong>: West Nile virus, Ebola, U.K Strain(B.1.1.7) and South African Strain(B.1.351).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>What is the problem with this method of naming strains?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The current method is stigmatizing<\/strong> and disincentivizing countries from making their sequencing results public as the virus strains are associated with the geographical tag.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Moreover, the current naming of <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/how-should-india-handle-the-new-virus-variants\/\">virus variants<\/a><\/strong> is also difficult to remember for the public due to complicated lineage numbers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>What will the new method be like?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The new method of naming virus strains <\/strong>would be similar to the way tropical storms are named.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/cyclone-tauktae-expected-to-hit-gujarat\/\"><strong>For the naming of tropical storms<\/strong><\/a>, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) leaves it to countries that surround a particular ocean basin to come up with names.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/epaper.thehindu.com\/Home\/MShareArticle?OrgId=GKL8JG0RU.1&amp;imageview=0\"><strong>The Hindu<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
