It is a drop of 28 places compared to last year. While Bangladesh is the best performer in South Asia, ranked 65th.<\/li>\n<li>The report focuses on <strong>measuring gaps between men and women<\/strong> in accessing resources and opportunities.<\/li>\n<li>The Index measures the performance of countries based on <strong>four dimensions<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Economic participation and opportunity<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Labour force participation rate<\/li>\n<li>Wage equality for similar work (on a 1\u20137 scale)<\/li>\n<li>Estimated earned income<\/li>\n<li>Legislators, senior officials, and managers<\/li>\n<li>Professional and technical workers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Educational attainment<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Literacy rate<\/li>\n<li>Enrollment in primary education<\/li>\n<li>Enrollment in secondary education<\/li>\n<li>Enrollment in tertiary education<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Health and survival<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Sex ratio at birth<\/li>\n<li>Healthy life expectancy (years)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Political empowerment<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Women in Parliament<\/li>\n<li>Women in ministerial positions<\/li>\n<li>Years with female head of state (in the last 50 years)A total score of 1 indicates perfect equality between men and women, whereas a score of 0 indicates complete inequality.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><strong>Comparison between India and Bangladesh<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Indicators where Bangladesh doing better than India-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sex ratio at birth- <\/strong>Bangladesh is ranked first in the world for \u2018sex ratio at birth,&#8217; whereas India is ranked 152nd.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Literacy rate &#8211; <\/strong>Bangladesh is much ahead in the female-male ratio in literacy rate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Labour force participation &#8211; <\/strong>Bangladesh has a 0.46 female-to-male ratio, whereas India has a 0.28 female-to-male ratio.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wage equality for similar work- <\/strong>On a 1-7 scale, the equality of wages between\u00a0men and\u00a0women for similar work in India is 3.38 compared to 4.09 in Bangladesh.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Estimated earned income &#8211;<\/strong> The female-male ratio in India is 0.21, whereas in Bangladesh it is 0.40.\n<ul>\n<li>This suggests that, in comparison to India, Bangladeshi women have a larger percentage of paid jobs with comparable salaries than their male counterparts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Women in parliament &#8211; <\/strong>Bangladesh has a higher female-to-male parliamentarian ratio (0.26) than India (0.17).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Women as head of the state &#8211; \u00a0<\/strong>Bangladesh has attained equality (1), whereas India is at 0.45.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Indicators where India doing better than Bangladesh \u2013<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Senior position jobs (Legislators, Senior Officials, and Managers) &#8211;<\/strong> In India, the ratio of women to men in senior posts is 0.17, whereas, in Bangladesh, it is 0.12.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Technical and professional workers &#8211;<\/strong> India (0.41) is also better in terms of\u00a0female-male ratio\u00a0for \u2018professional and technical work\u2019, as compared to Bangladesh (0.32).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Enrollment in tertiary level education &#8211; <\/strong>India has done much better in enrollment in tertiary education.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Women in ministerial positions <\/strong>&#8211; \u00a0Ratio is 0.08 in Bangladesh and 0.1 in India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What are the reasons that Bangladesh outperforms other South Asian countries in terms of gender equality?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The relatively rapid improvements in the lives of Bangladeshi women have been possible because of the steps taken by Bangladesh after the 1971 Liberation war.
