{"id":10827,"date":"2019-10-11T16:20:33","date_gmt":"2019-10-11T10:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/factly.forumias.com\/?p=10827"},"modified":"2019-10-11T16:20:33","modified_gmt":"2019-10-11T10:50:33","slug":"gangetic-river-dolphin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/gangetic-river-dolphin\/","title":{"rendered":"Gangetic River Dolphin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> The annual\nGanges river dolphin census has begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Ganges River\nDolphin Census<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It is undertaken by World Wide Fund for\nNature-India in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department.<\/li><li>It takes place along about 250-km-long riverine\nstretch of Upper Ganga between Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary and Narora Ramsar\nsite.<\/li><li>Unlike previous years, when direct counting\nmethod was used, this year the tandem boat survey method is being used.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Tandem Boat\nsurvey Method:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The method has been developed by the renowned\nriver and marine ecologist Gill Braulik.<\/li><li>Under this method, the officials use two\ninflated boats which move in tandem to count the dolphins. After collating the\ndata, statistical tools are employed to arrive at the final count.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Gangetic\nDolphin<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Gangetic river dolphin inhabits the\nGanges-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Karnaphuli-Sangu river systems of Nepal, India,\nand Bangladesh.<\/li><li>Being a mammal, the Ganges River dolphin cannot\nbreathe in the water and must surface every 30-120 seconds. Because of the\nsound it produces when breathing, the animal is popularly referred to as the\n&#8216;Susu&#8217;.<\/li><li>It is among the four \u201cobligate\u201d freshwater\ndolphins. The other obligate freshwater dolphins are a) Baiji (likely extinct)\nfound in Yangtze river in China, b) the Bhulan in Indus river of Pakistan and\nc) the Boto in Amazon river in Latin America.<\/li><li>In India, Dolphins are protected species as per\nthe Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The government has also declared\nGangetic Dolphin as the national aquatic animal.<\/li><li>Gangetic dolphin is listed as Endangered in the\nIUCN Red List.<\/li><li>The only dolphin sanctuary in India is the Vikramshila\nGangetic Dolphin Sanctuary located in Bhagalpur District of Bihar.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The annual Ganges river dolphin census has begun.
