{"id":108872,"date":"2021-05-26T16:48:24","date_gmt":"2021-05-26T11:18:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=108872"},"modified":"2021-05-26T20:53:47","modified_gmt":"2021-05-26T15:23:47","slug":"national-mission-on-use-of-biomass-in-thermal-power-plants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-mission-on-use-of-biomass-in-thermal-power-plants\/","title":{"rendered":"National Mission on Use of Biomass in Thermal Power plants"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>What is the News?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The Ministry of Power has decided to set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/budget-2020national-mission-on-quantum-technologies-application\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Mission <\/a>on the use of Biomass in thermal power plants.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>About National Mission on the use of Biomass in thermal power plants:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Aim of the mission: <\/strong>It aims to address the issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/air-pollution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">air pollution<\/a> by farm-stubble burning. Further, it will also reduce the carbon footprints of thermal power generation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objectives<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It will promote the use of Biomass in Thermal Power Plants to increase the present level of co-firing at 5% from biomass to a higher level.<\/li>\n<li>Further, Research and Development in boiler design will be taken up so that it can handle the higher amount of alkalis and silica present in biomass pellets.<\/li>\n<li>It will also sort out the constraints in the supply chain of biomass pellets and agro-residue to the power plants.<\/li>\n<li>Lastly, it will consider regulatory issues in biomass co-firing.<\/li>\n<li><b>Co-firing<\/b> is a low-cost option for efficiently and cleanly converting <b>biomass<\/b> to electricity. It adds <b>biomass<\/b> as a partial substitute fuel in high-efficiency coal boilers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Implementation of the Mission: <\/strong>The procedure to implement the Mission is under finalization process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Duration: <\/strong>The duration of the proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/environment-quiz-organizations-national-missions-on-environment-dec-22020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Mission<\/a> would be a minimum of 5 years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance: <\/strong>The proposed National Mission on biomass will also contribute to the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/ngt-slams-moef-over-national-clean-air-programme\/\">National Clean Air Programme(NCAP).<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>About Biomass:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Biomass <\/strong>is a renewable organic material that comes from plants and animals. It can be used as an energy source.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Biomass as an Energy Source in India:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Firstly, Biomass has always been an important energy source for India. It is a renewable, widely available, carbon-neutral source with the potential to provide <strong>significant employment<\/strong> in rural areas.<\/li>\n<li>Secondly, about 32% of the total primary energy use in the country is still derived from biomass.
