They\u00a0<\/strong><b>criticized<\/b>\u00a0the government and the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. So the sedition case was filed against these channels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>What did the petitioners argue?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The petitioners said that the case against them<\/strong> constitutes an attempt to silence the electronic media. They also argued the case as an assault on the freedom of speech and expression under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Moreover, the allegations in the FIR <\/strong>do not establish any offences under the provisions which have been invoked against them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>What did the Court say?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Supreme Court <\/strong>has restrained the Andhra Pradesh police from taking coercive action against two TV news channels charged with sedition. However, the court did not stay the investigation in the case.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Moreover, the court observed<\/strong> that there was a need to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">define the scope of offences under Section 124A<\/span> (sedition) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Section 153A<\/span> (promotion of communal hatred) and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Section 505<\/span> (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>This was especially needed<\/strong> in the context of media freedom and particularly on the issue of the rights of the press and free speech.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>About Section 124A of IPC:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u00a0is defined as\u00a0<strong>any action that brings or attempts to bring contempt or hatred towards the government of India.<\/strong>\u00a0Sedition cases are punishable with a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.<\/li>\n<li>It is classified as \u201ccognisable\u201d(No need Court warrant to arrest the person) and a \u201cnon-bailable\u201d and \u201cnon-compoundable\u201d offence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/sc-to-examine-interpretation-of-sedition-law-over-right-of-press-free-speech-7338144\/\"><strong>Indian Express<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
