It was also a response to concerns about food shortages.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The policy was implemented<\/strong> through several means. Such as, incentivising families financially to have one child, making contraceptives widely available and imposing sanctions against those who violated the policy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>However, the policy <\/strong>was also a source of discontent as:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The state used brutal tactics<\/strong> such as forced abortions and sterilisations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Controversial <\/strong>for violating human rights<\/li>\n<li>Being <strong>unfair to poorer Chinese<\/strong> since the richer ones could afford to pay economic sanctions if they violated the policy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Was the One Child Policy successful?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The policy has been blamed<\/strong> for making China\u2019s<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> population aged faster<\/span> than other countries, impacting the country\u2019s growth potential.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It is also suggested<\/strong> that because of the one-child policy, China would be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">unable to reap the full benefits of its economic growth<\/span> and will need other ways to support it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>China\u2019s Two-Child Policy:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In 2016,<\/strong> China relaxed its One Child Policy. It allowed two children per couple. However, the policy change did little to change the rapid fall in population growth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>According to Census 2020, <\/strong>around 12 million babies were born in 2020.
