{"id":110151,"date":"2021-06-02T15:04:29","date_gmt":"2021-06-02T09:34:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=110151"},"modified":"2021-06-02T15:04:54","modified_gmt":"2021-06-02T09:34:54","slug":"world-no-tobacco-day-and-tobacco-consumption-in-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/world-no-tobacco-day-and-tobacco-consumption-in-india\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;World No Tobacco Day&#8221; and &#8220;Tobacco Consumption&#8221; in India"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>What is the News?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Every year, on\u00a0<strong>31<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0May,<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/united-nations-organisations-in-news-prelims-capsules-2021\/#World_Health_Organization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>World Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and global partners celebrate\u00a0<strong>World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). <\/strong>This year, the WHO has honoured the health minister of India with the &#8216;<strong>WHO Director-General Special Recognition Award&#8217; <\/strong>for his effort to control tobacco consumption in India.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>About World No Tobacco Day:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>World No Tobacco Day <\/strong>is an annual event organised by the World Health Organisation(WHO) on May 31st.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objective: <\/strong>The day aims to raise awareness about the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use. Thereby, discouraging the use of tobacco in any form.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Theme: \u201c<\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Commit to Quit<\/span>&#8220;. This theme aims to support 100 million people worldwide to give up tobacco through a range of initiatives and digital solutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Tobacco Consumption in India:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reduction in Tobacco Use<\/strong>: Due to the efforts of Central and State Governments, the prevalence of tobacco use has <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">decreased by six percentage<\/span> points from 34.6% in 2009-10 to 28.6% in 2016-17.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Deaths due to <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/tobacco-problem-in-india-an-overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tobacco Consumption<\/a>: <\/strong>In India, every year more than 1.3 million deaths are attributable to tobacco use. This amounts to 3500 deaths per day due to tobacco consumption.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Risk of Covid-19: <\/strong>Tobacco smokers face a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">40-50% higher risk<\/span> of developing severe disease deaths from COVID-19.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Economic Cost: <\/strong>As per the WHO report, the economic burden of diseases and deaths attributable to tobacco use in India was as high as Rs. 1.77 lakh crores. This amounts to approx 1% of Indian GDP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Initiatives taken by India to Control Tobacco Consumption:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cigarettes Act,1975: <\/strong>The act mandated the<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> display of statutory health warnings<\/span> in advertisement and on cartons and cigarette packages.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act(COTPA),2003: <\/strong>The act replaced the Cigarettes Act of 1975. It aims to provide smoke-free public places and also placed restrictions on tobacco advertising and promotion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prohibition of <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/answered-discuss-the-harmful-impact-of-e-cigarettes-do-you-think-it-is-right-to-completely-ban-the-e-cigarettes-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Electronic Cigarettes<\/a> Bill, 2019<\/strong>: It aims to prohibit the Production, Manufacture, Import, Export, Transport, Sale, Distribution, Storage and Advertisement of e-Cigarettes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>National Health Policy 2017: <\/strong>It has set an ambitious target of<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> reducing tobacco use by 30%<\/span> by 2025.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tobacco Quit line service -1800-112-356:<\/strong> It was initiated in 2016 to reach a large number of tobacco users.
