This is 67.39% higher when compared to May 2020.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The large rise <\/strong>can be attributed to a weak base due to the disruption caused by a nationwide lockdown in 2020.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>However, comparisons with May 2019<\/strong> also showed exports have grown by 7.9%, indicating a real recovery in the export sector.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The growth in exports <\/strong>was primarily due to a rise in demand for engineering goods, petroleum products, gems and jewelry, pharmaceuticals, and iron ore.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Merchandise Imports:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>India\u2019s merchandise imports<\/strong> are estimated at $38.53 billion in May 2021. This is 68.6% higher when compared with May 2020.<\/li>\n<li><strong>However, the imports<\/strong> were 17.5% lower when compared to May 2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Trade Deficit:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>India\u2019s trade deficit<\/strong> has decreased to an eight-month low. It is at $6.3 billion in May 2021 when compared to $15.1 billion in April.<\/li>\n<li><strong>This is due to <\/strong>State-level restrictions that widened over May and curbed domestic demand for both gold and oil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Way Forward:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The government needs to <\/strong>soon notify the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/rodtep-scheme-delay-in-notification-of-rebate-rates\/\">RoDTEP [Remission of Duties and Taxes on Export Products] <\/a>rates to remove uncertainty and help expedite new contracts with foreign buyers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/epaper.thehindu.com\/Home\/MShareArticle?OrgId=GV68KRFFP.1&amp;imageview=0\"><strong>The Hindu<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
