In that, the court held that the Journalists need protection against sedition charges.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What was the case?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A sedition case <\/strong>was filed against a senior journalist over his YouTube show where he had criticized the Prime Minister and the Union Government.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The journalist approached the<\/strong> Supreme Court seeking the quashing of the FIR. He told the Supreme Court that criticism of the government was not in itself seditious unless it instigated the violence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>What did the Court say?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Supreme Court <\/strong>invalidated the sedition case registered against the journalist.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Criticism &amp; disapproval doesn&#8217;t amount to sedition<\/strong>: The court said that <strong>strong words of disapproval<\/strong> about the ruling government<strong> is not sedition<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Moreover, mere criticism of governments is not sufficient to constitute sedition. Honest and reasonable criticism is a source of strength to a community rather than a weakness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Court also referred to the 1962 Kedar Nath Singh verdict <\/strong>and said that under it every journalist is entitled to protection from sedition charges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Kedar Nath Singh Judgment,1962<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>In Kedar Nath Singh v. State of Bihar (1962), the Supreme Court <strong>upheld the constitutional validity<\/strong> of the <strong>sedition law<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Court said that sedition is a <strong>reasonable restriction on free speech<\/strong> as provided in Article 19(2) of the Constitution.<\/li>\n<li>However, the court made it clear that a <strong>citizen has the right to say or write<\/strong> whatever she\/he likes about the government or its measures.<\/li>\n<li><strong>But this is only as long as<\/strong> s\/he does not <strong>incite people to violence<\/strong> against the government and not do things with the intention of creating <strong>public disorder.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/epaper.thehindu.com\/Home\/MShareArticle?OrgId=GRE8KV39J.1&amp;imageview=0\"><strong>The Hindu<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
