This would serve the collection, comfort, and audience experience needs of the Museum in a better way.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Background:<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Museum in Delhi is a repository of India\u2019s rich history and proud heritage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, now the government has planned to shift it to the North and South Blocks.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Why the national museum is being shifted?<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Bigger space: <\/b>T<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he new location is four and a half times bigger than the current space. This would enable <\/span><b>organizing bigger and better cultural events<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Bigger space would also allow hosting national and international travelling exhibitions, which is not possible in current space.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advancement in technology has<\/span> increased the speed of excavations<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the country. This would generate greater artefacts in future which would <strong>require bigger storage space.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Enhanced display potential<\/strong>: C<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urrent building only displays 6% of its 2 lakh cultural collections available with the museum. The new museum would enable the creation of additional galleries for<\/span><b> enhancing display potential.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Expansion of National Museum Institute<\/strong>: The new building would <\/span><b>enable the expansion of the National Museum Institute<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NMI). The students of NMI would benefit from a large increase in laboratory, gallery and teaching facilities.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, it will allow incorporation of NMI\u2019s programmes in Museology, Art History and Conservation along with other programmes in Archaeology, Archival Studies and so on.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Vulnerable &amp; old design<\/strong>: T<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he current building is of outdated design and more vulnerable to disasters and pests attacks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he move is in line with <\/span><b>international practices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For instance, the Egyptian Government is planning to replace the crowded Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square in Cairo with an impressive Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Way Ahead<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are certain <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/challenges-involved-in-shifting-the-national-museum-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenges associated with the National Museum<\/a>. But, the revamped National Museum would become the foundation for a vibrant museum movement in India.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government should duly preserve the artefacts until the new building is completed.
