{"id":110772,"date":"2021-06-05T17:52:06","date_gmt":"2021-06-05T12:22:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=110772"},"modified":"2021-06-05T17:57:16","modified_gmt":"2021-06-05T12:27:16","slug":"what-is-the-delta-variant-of-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/what-is-the-delta-variant-of-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the &#8220;Delta variant of Covid-19&#8221;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>What is the news?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>As per a study carried out by INSACOG<em> (the consortium of labs undertaking genome sequencing in India),\u00a0<\/em>Delta variant of Covid-19 is the primary cause of the second Covid-19 wave gripping the country presently.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is the Delta Variant of Covid-19?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/world-health-organizationwho-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a> (WHO) has named B.1.617.1 variant as &#8216;<strong>Kappa<\/strong>&#8216; and B.1.617.2 variant as &#8216;<strong>Delta<\/strong>&#8216;\n<ul>\n<li>These variants are <strong>sub-lineages of <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/who-classifies-indian-variant-as-variant-of-concern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">B.1.617<\/a><\/strong> which was detected in India in 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>This new nomenclature for the various variants of the coronavirus using Greek alphabets was introduced to simplify public discussions and also help remove the stigma from the names.<\/li>\n<li>Moreover, WHO has also categorized the Delta variant as a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/what-are-variants-of-concern-voc\/\">Variant of Concern (VOC)<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>What is Variant of Concern (VOC)?\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>WHO classifies a variant as a VOC when it is associated with<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>An increase in transmissibility<\/strong> or detrimental change in Covid-19 epidemiology or<\/li>\n<li><strong>Increase in virulence<\/strong> (Ability to cause severe\/life-threatening disease)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Decrease in the effectiveness <\/strong>of public health measures or available diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Why is Delta Variant more dangerous than other variants?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>This variant has <strong>multiple mutations<\/strong> that appear to give it an advantage over other strains.<\/li>\n<li>The most important advantage is that the<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> mutations may make the strain <strong>more transmissible.<\/strong><\/span>This will make the delta variant the <strong>most dangerous variant<\/strong> yet.<\/li>\n<li>One study indicated that the Delta variant may be up to 50% more transmissible than the B.1.1.7 (U.K.\/Alpha) variant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>What is a mutation?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>A mutation means a <strong>change in the genetic sequence<\/strong> of the virus.<\/li>\n<li>In the case of Covid-19, which is a Ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus, a mutation means a change in the sequence in which its molecules are arranged.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/how-should-india-handle-the-new-virus-variants\/\">mutation<\/a> <\/strong>in an RNA virus often happens when the virus makes a mistake while it is making copies of itself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/covid-delta-variant-coronavirus-cases-7344758\/\"><strong>Indian Express<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the news?
