The countries must administer two doses of vaccine and should<a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/issues-and-significance-of-longer-vaccine-gaps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> reduce the time gap between them<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Background<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The WHO has recently given a new classification to SARS-CoV-2 <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/who-classifies-indian-variant-as-variant-of-concern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">variants of interest (VOI)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/who-classifies-indian-variant-as-variant-of-concern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">variants of concern (VOC) <\/a>on the basis of Greek letters. The objective was to create easy-to-pronounce and non-stigmatising labels for VOI and VOC.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the established nomenclature systems for naming and tracking of SARS-CoV-2 genetic lineages by GISAID, Nextstrain and Pango will remain in use for scientific research.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new classification is as follows:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VOC B.1.1.7 will be called Alpha Variant. It was the earliest <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/uk-variant-behind-current-covid-19-surge-in-delhi-ncdc-chief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documented in the United Kingdom<\/a> (September 2020).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VOC B.1.351 will be called Beta Variant. It was the earliest documented in South Africa (May 2020).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VOC P.1 will be called Gamma Variant. It was the earliest documented in Brazil (November 2020).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VOC B.1.617.2 will be called <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/what-is-the-delta-variant-of-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Delta Variant<\/a>. It was the earliest documented in India (October 2020).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>About the Delta Variant:<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was first identified in Maharashtra and is believed to be responsible for the severe second wave in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has now spread to most parts of India and also been identified in many other countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rapid expansion has induced the WHO to graduate it from a \u201cvariant of interest\u201d (VOI) to a \u201cvariant of concern\u201d (VOC) category.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists have undertaken various studies to address 3 major questions surrounding the delta VOC &#8211;\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it more infectious than the prevalent virus? <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it more lethal than the previous virus? <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does the delta variant is more resistant to the effect of vaccines?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><b>Data shown by various studies on vaccines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Read Also :-<a class=\"seoquake-params-link\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/what-are-variants-of-concern-voc\/\" rel=\"b614ef44 x_url\">What are &#8220;Variants of Concern&#8221; (VoC)?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Results of Study conducted by <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/government-launches-indian-sars-cov-2-genomic-consortiainsacog-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomic Consortia<\/a> (INSACOG) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC):<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Delta variant is the \u201cprime reason\u201d behind the second wave, though the wave may have been initiated by the Alpha variant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Delta Variant has become dominant even in Britain, where scientists have recently noted that it is 50% more infectious than the Alpha variant.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Results of study on vaccines conducted by Public Health England:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A single dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine provided 33% efficacy against the Delta variant, while it was 51% against the Alpha variant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second dose improved the efficacy to 60% against the Delta variant and to 66% against the Alpha variant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, two doses of Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine provided much higher levels of protection than two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Results of a British study on vaccines published in Lancet Journal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merely 32%of the vaccinated individuals had adequate antibody levels against the Delta variant after the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. It was 25% against the beta variant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The antibody levels rose after the second dose. However, they were far below the levels obtained against the initial variant of the Covid-19 virus.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Results of a study on vaccines conducted by the Pasteur Institute, France<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Delta variant showed reduced response to both the vaccines (Pfizer and Astrazeneca). It was resistant to neutralisation by some monoclonal antibodies targeting the Spike protein.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study concluded that a single dose of the Astrazeneca vaccine will not display optimal protection against the delta variant.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Lessons learnt from the various study on vaccines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>First<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Delta variant is the most infectious variant in circulation. However, there is not much convincing evidence to prove it is more deadlier than the previous variants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Second<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vaccines have diminished efficacy against the delta variant. Further, a <strong>single dose of either the AstraZeneca or the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine does not provide adequate protection<\/strong> against the Delta variant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Third<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a shortened dosing interval is recommended to deal with the Delta variant.
