The meeting provided a template for Indian engagement with the West based on shared democratic values and mutual cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Background<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recent summit of G7 countries took place in Cornwall, England from 11-13th June 2021. India, Australia, South Korea, and South Africa were invited as guest countries for the Summit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>joint statement on Open Societies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was adopted. The statement reaffirms and encourages the values of freedom of expression, both online and offline.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It recognizes freedom as a virtue for safeguarding democracy and allowing people to live free from fear and oppression.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Significance of the summit:<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian Participation shows it is a natural ally of the G-7 and its partners. Further, laying emphasis on shared democratic values that bind India with the West shows a <\/span><b>greater willingness to cooperate with India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The summit can be seen as the <\/span><b>beginning of institutionalization<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of India\u2019s cooperation with the West.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The joint statement on open societies shows a <\/span><b>willingness to construct an alliance of democratic countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This can be leveraged as <\/span><b>a common platform to counter China\u2019s assertiveness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over India and the western countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also shows the<\/span><b> revived importance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the grouping in comparison to the G20. The 1998 nuclear test saw the imposition of sanctions by the U.S over India.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, prudent efforts have been made since 1998 to improve the relations based on the shared commitment to democratic values.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indian government supported the U.S&#8217;s initiative on<\/span><b> building a global community of democracies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It can be used to initiate a fresh inquiry into the origins of the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/kerala-model-to-tackle-the-covid-19-pandemic-in-india\/\">Covid-19 pandemic<\/a> in China.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India should participate in the grouping for ensuring a <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indo-pacific-and-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peaceful Indo-Pacific<\/a>, mitigating climate change and prudently managing the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indias-response-to-shocks-1962-war-to-2020-covid-pandemic\/\">Covid pandemic<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, there is a need for sustained consultations based on democratic values between India and the West over new challenges posed by digital technologies.
