Thus, Energy Efficient homes will be the key to make India a low carbon economy.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Background<\/strong>:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>In the last three decades, India experienced 660 heat waves which caused 12,273 deaths.<\/li>\n<li>These intense heat waves are expected to rise with a rise in global temperatures due to climate change.<\/li>\n<li>This<strong> rising frequency and growing intensity of heat waves<\/strong> are resulting in increased demand for cooling in Indian homes.<\/li>\n<li>The growing demand for cooling will make India the world\u2019s largest energy user for cooling, but this area has not gained much significance in Indian homes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Why India needs energy-efficient cooling in Indian homes?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Firstly, it is going to play a huge role in India\u2019s <strong>adaptation<\/strong> to climate change.<\/li>\n<li>Secondly, energy inefficiency in Indian homes cooling system will have disastrous effects on mitigation efforts taken by India to <strong>curb Greenhouse gas emissions.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>India Cooling Action Plan<\/strong> projects the number of room air conditioners to become about four times in the next 10 years, and about 10 times in the next 20 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Thirdly, large-scale adoption of efficient cooling appliances is essential to achieve a low carbon economy as per the Paris climate deal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Read Also :-<a class=\"seoquake-params-link\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/increasing-energy-efficiency-among-consumers\/\" rel=\"77c93fe1 x_url\">How to increase energy efficiency?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Energy efficiency in homes remains underexplored in India?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Firstly, there is a <strong>lack of data<\/strong> regarding consumer\u2019s preference for energy-efficient cooling systems.\n<ul>\n<li>For example, how and why people make their purchase decisions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Secondly, the implications of an increase in residential cooling demand have not been carefully examined by policymakers in India.\n<ul>\n<li>For instance, the factors which will determine the extent of future cooling demand have no empirical evidence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Thirdly, energy efficiency <strong>does not feature as a priority<\/strong> in the purchase of cooling appliances.\n<ul>\n<li>For instance, only 7% of the households have an energy-efficient (star-rated) fan, and 88% of the coolers are locally assembled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Fourthly, there is a <strong>lack of awareness<\/strong> about energy efficiency.\n<ul>\n<li>For example, one-third of the households are unaware of the <strong>Star Labelling program<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is a government programme mandatory for refrigerators and air conditioners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Lastly, there is the <strong>higher upfront cost and low market availability<\/strong> for energy-efficient appliances.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><strong>Way forward:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Investment in cooling technologies, infrastructure is required to lock in energy-efficient consumption patterns.<\/li>\n<li>Awareness campaigns should be conducted on energy efficiency.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Subsidies and financial incentives<\/strong> are needed to drive up the adoption of more efficient technologies.<\/li>\n<li>Efficient building designs can also help in reducing dependence on energy-intensive cooling technologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Indian homes can play a major role to achieve net-zero emissions but along with the usage of energy-efficient technologies, there is a need to promote <strong>alternative cooling strategies.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Read Also :-<a class=\"seoquake-params-link\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/issue-of-nuclear-waste-pollution-explained-pointwise\/\" rel=\"f9f3a6a6 x_url\">Issue of Nuclear Waste pollution\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/epaper.thehindu.com\/Home\/ShareArticle?OrgId=GCL8M4LR0.1&amp;imageview=0\">The Hindu<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Synopsis: The demand for cooling appliances is bound to grow in the future to keep citizens healthy and productive.
