It was released on the occasion of <strong>World Day to Combat Desertification.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: var(--heading--font-family); font-size: var(--heading--font-size-h5); letter-spacing: var(--heading--letter-spacing-h5); background-color: var(--global--color-background); color: var(--global--color-primary);\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Note<\/strong><\/span><em><strong>: <\/strong><\/em><\/strong><em>Desertification is the degradation of land in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas. It is caused primarily by human activities and climatic variations.<\/em><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; background-color: #f7f2f2;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>About Desertification and Land Degradation Atlas of India<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Published by: <\/strong>The Atlas has been published by Space Application Centre, ISRO, Ahmedabad.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prepared using: <\/strong>The Atlas was prepared using <strong>IRS Advanced Wide Field Sensor (AWiFS) data<\/strong> of 2011-13 and 2003-05 time frames in the Geographical Information System (GIS) environment.<\/li>\n<li>The Atlas provides a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">state-wise area of degraded lands<\/span> for the time frame 2018-19.<\/li>\n<li>It also provides <strong>the change analysis <\/strong>for the duration of 15 years from 2003-05 to 2018-19.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: var(--heading--font-family); font-size: var(--heading--font-size-h5); letter-spacing: var(--heading--letter-spacing-h5); background-color: var(--global--color-background); color: var(--global--color-primary);\">Significance of the Atlas<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is helpful in prioritizing areas to be taken up for minimizing the impact of desertification and land degradation.<\/li>\n<li>Moreover, the Atlas will also be helpful in <strong>strengthening the proposed National Action Plan for achieving land restoration targets<\/strong> by providing important inputs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; background-color: #f7f2f2;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Also read:<\/strong><\/span> <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/answeredwhat-are-various-reasons-for-increasing-land-degradation-and-desertification-across-india-discuss-its-consequences-and-suggest-some-measures\/\">Land Degradation &#8211; Causes and Consequences<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h5><strong style=\"background-color: var(--global--color-background); color: var(--global--color-primary); font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">Efforts to Combat Desertification<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>India is a <strong>signatory to the United Nations Convention on Combating Desertification (UNCCD)<\/strong> and is committed to achieving the land degradation neutral status by 2030.<\/li>\n<li>India hosted the <strong>14<sup>th<\/sup> session of the Conference of Parties (COP 14)<\/strong> of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in September 2019.<\/li>\n<li>Further, India is striving towards achieving the <strong>national commitments of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN)<\/strong> and the restoration of 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030.\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The concept of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) <strong>emerged from<\/strong> the <strong>UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in 2012<\/strong>. LDN responds to an immediate challenge: intensifying the production of food, fuel and fiber to meet future demand without further degrading our finite land resource base. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"42\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In other words, Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) envisions a world where human activity has a <strong>neutral, or even positive, impact on the land<\/strong>.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"42\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The UNCCD Secretariat launched this Land Degradation Neutrality initiative, which has been <strong>enshrined in the SDGs as target 15.3<\/strong> on achieving a land degradation neutral world by 2030.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Government of India has set up a<strong> Desertification<\/strong> <strong>Cell<\/strong> under the Ministry of Environment, Forest &amp; Climate Change (MoEF&amp;CC). The cell <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">represents India in UNCCD<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>About World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year on <strong>17<sup>th<\/sup> June<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The day was proclaimed<\/strong> by the United Nations General Assembly resolution in 1995 after the day when the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification(UNCCD) was drafted.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim: <\/strong>The day is observed every year to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The theme for 2021: <\/strong>\u201cRestoration. Land. Recovery.
