{"id":11381,"date":"2019-11-05T16:20:18","date_gmt":"2019-11-05T10:50:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/factly.forumias.com\/?p=11381"},"modified":"2019-11-05T16:20:18","modified_gmt":"2019-11-05T10:50:18","slug":"union-minister-for-rural-development-releases-wastelands-atlas-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/union-minister-for-rural-development-releases-wastelands-atlas-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Union Minister for Rural Development releases \u2018Wastelands Atlas\u2019 \u2013 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> The\nMinistry of Rural Development has released the Wastelands Atlas \u2013 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Wastelands\nAtlas:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Westland Atlas is prepared by the Department\nof Land Resources, Ministry of Rural Development in collaboration with National\nRemote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Department of Space.<\/li><li>Wastelands Atlases of India were previously\npublished in 2000, 2005, 2010 &amp; 2011.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key takeaways from\nWastelands Atlas 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The spatial extent of wastelands for India is 55.76\nMha (16.96 % of geographical area of India i.e. 328.72 Mha) for the year\n2015-16 as compared to 56.60 Mha (17.21%) in the year 2008-09. <\/li><li>During this period 1.45 Mha of wastelands have\nbeen converted into non wastelands categories.&nbsp;\n<\/li><li>Majority of wastelands have been changed into\ncategories of \u2018croplands\u2019, \u2018forest-dense \/ open\u2019, \u2018forest plantation\u2019, \u2018plantation\u2019\nand \u2018industrial area\u2019<\/li><li>A reduction in wasteland area was observed in\nthe categories of land with dense scrub, waterlogged and marshy land, sandy\nareas, degraded pastures \/ grazing land and gullied and \/ or ravinous land.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional\nInformation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wastelands<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wastelands refer to degraded lands that are\ncurrently underutilized, and are deteriorating for lack of appropriate soil\n&amp; water management or on account of natural causes. <\/li><li>Wastelands develop naturally or due to influence\nof environment, chemical and physical properties of the soil or management\nconstraints.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Important Categories\nof Wasteland<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Gullied\nand\/or Ravinous Land:<\/strong> Gully is a narrow channel when surface water flow\nincreases in response to clearing and excessive use of land. The intricate\nnetwork of gullies is referred to as ravines.<\/li><li><strong>Scrubland:<\/strong>\nThis is the land, which is generally prone to deterioration due to erosion.<\/li><li><strong>Waterlogged\n\/ Marshy Land<\/strong>: It is that low lying land where the water is at\/or near the surface\nand the water stands for most part of the year.<\/li><li><strong>Land affected\nby salinity\/alkalinity<\/strong>: &nbsp;Land\naffected by salinity\/alkalinity have excess soluble salts (saline) or high\nexchangeable sodium.<\/li><li><strong>Shifting\nCultivation Areas:<\/strong> Shifting cultivation is a traditional practice of\ngrowing crops on forested\/ vegetated hill-slope by the slash and burn method.<\/li><li><strong>Degraded\npastures\/grazing land<\/strong>: These are the lands in non-forest areas that are\neither under permanent pastures or meadows, which have degraded due to lack of\nproper soil and water conservation and drainage development measures.<\/li><li><strong>Mining\n\/Industrial wastelands<\/strong>: Mine dumps are those lands where waste debris is\naccumulated after extraction of minerals.<\/li><li><strong>Barren\nRocky Area<\/strong>: These are rock exposures of varying lithology often barren and\ndevoid of soil and vegetative cover.<\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The Ministry of Rural Development has released the Wastelands Atlas \u2013 2019 Facts: About Wastelands Atlas: The Westland Atlas is prepared by the Department of Land Resources, Ministry of Rural Development in collaboration with National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Department of Space.
