{"id":113922,"date":"2021-06-21T17:06:10","date_gmt":"2021-06-21T11:36:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=113922"},"modified":"2021-06-21T19:16:08","modified_gmt":"2021-06-21T13:46:08","slug":"global-assessment-report-gar-on-drought-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/global-assessment-report-gar-on-drought-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Global Assessment Report (GAR) on Drought 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>What is the News?\u00a0<\/strong>The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction(UNDRR) has released a report titled \u201cGlobal Assessment Report (GAR) on Drought 2021\u201d.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>About Global Assessment Report (GAR) on Drought 2021:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The report <\/strong>explores the systemic nature of drought and its impacts on the achievement of the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/un-report-warns-of-greater-economic-threat-to-nations-not-investing-in-drr\/\">Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, t<\/a>he SDGs, and human and ecosystem, health and wellbeing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Findings of the Report:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Globally:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Around 20 million people <\/strong>across Africa and the Middle East are on the brink of starvation due to droughts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Around 700 million people <\/strong>are at risk of being displaced as a result of drought by 2030.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Two-third of the world <\/strong>will be under water-stressed conditions by 2025.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Findings Related to India:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The effect of severe droughts <\/strong>on India&#8217;s gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated at 2-5%.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Deccan region <\/strong>sees the highest frequency (&gt;6%) of severe droughts in all of India.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Significant drought conditions<\/strong> are found once every three years in the Deccan plateau, leading to large-scale migration and desertification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Overdependence <\/strong>on groundwater resources and lack of water-retaining structures have significantly increased vulnerability in Indian cities during severe drought events.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Recommendations:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Prevention: <\/strong>Prevention has far lower human, financial and environmental costs than reaction and response.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Risk Governance: <\/strong>Increased understanding of complex systemic risks and improved risk governance can lead to effective action on drought risk.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Partnerships: <\/strong>Drought resilience partnerships at the national and local levels will be critical for managing drought in a warming world.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Management Mechanisms:<\/strong> A mechanism for drought management at the international and national levels could help address the complex and cascading nature of drought risk.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Financial Systems: <\/strong>Financial systems and services must evolve to encourage cooperative approaches, promote social protection mechanisms and encourage risk transfer and contingent financing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inclusion<\/strong>: New pathways are needed to encourage the inclusion of indigenous and local knowledge and the effective sharing of drought risk management experiences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/business\/india-business\/severe-droughts-to-impact-2-5-of-indias-gdp-un-report\/articleshow\/83644084.cms\"><strong>TOI<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?\u00a0The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction(UNDRR) has released a report titled \u201cGlobal Assessment Report (GAR) on Drought 2021\u201d.
