{"id":11483,"date":"2019-11-09T17:39:40","date_gmt":"2019-11-09T12:09:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/factly.forumias.com\/?p=11483"},"modified":"2019-11-09T17:39:40","modified_gmt":"2019-11-09T12:09:40","slug":"ozone-depletion-and-the-montreal-protocol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/ozone-depletion-and-the-montreal-protocol\/","title":{"rendered":"Ozone Depletion and the Montreal Protocol"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> NASA and US\nNational Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists have reported\nthat the annual ozone hole over the Antarctic has been found to be at its\nsmallest since the 1980s<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ozone Layer:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ozone layer, also called ozonosphere is a layer\nin the stratosphere lying between roughly 15 and 35 km above Earth\u2019s surface,\ncontaining relatively high concentrations of ozone molecules (O3).<\/li><li>By absorbing the harmful ultraviolet radiations\nfrom the sun, the ozone molecules protect earth from harmful UV rays which can\ncause skin cancer and other diseases and deformities, in plants and animals<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ozone hole:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It is a region in the stratosphere, directly\nabove Antarctica, where the concentration of ozone has been measured to become\nextremely low in certain months.<\/li><li>During experiments in Antarctica in the early\n1980s, scientists noticed that during September-November, the concentration of\nozone fell considerably lower to what was recorded in the 1950s. <\/li><li>Studies and satellite measurements confirmed the\ndepletion, and by mid-1980s scientists held a class of industrial chemicals\nlike chloroflurocarbons, or CFCs responsible for depletion of ozone. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Montreal Protocol<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>On September 16, 1987, the United Nations and 45 other countries had signed the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the Ozone layer.\u00a0<\/li><li>The purpose of the Montreal Protocol is to protect the Ozone layer by reducing the production of substances that are supposed to be responsible for Ozone layer depletion.<\/li><li>The protocol was further strengthened with the ratification of the legally binding <strong>Kigali Agreement <\/strong>at the 28th Meeting of the Parties in 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda.
