{"id":116234,"date":"2021-07-03T18:44:21","date_gmt":"2021-07-03T13:14:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=116234"},"modified":"2021-07-05T09:57:14","modified_gmt":"2021-07-05T04:27:14","slug":"in-centenary-backdrop-this-is-no-hand-of-peace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/in-centenary-backdrop-this-is-no-hand-of-peace\/","title":{"rendered":"In centenary backdrop, this is no hand of peace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/epaper.thehindu.com\/Home\/ShareArticle?OrgId=GBF8NQV69.1&amp;imageview=0\">The Hindu<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevance:<\/strong> There were many reasons behind China&#8217;s unprovoked misadventure in Galwan valley.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Synopsis: <\/strong>China is celebrating the <strong>100th anniversary of the foundation of the Communist Party of China (CPC),<\/strong> but an atmosphere of unpredictability still prevails.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Memories of the bloodiest clash in recent decades that occurred in the <strong>Galwan<\/strong> are still vivid in India\u2019s memory.<\/li>\n<li>After some progress in talks over troop disengagement in the vicinity of Pangong Tso Lake and the Kailash ranges, matters have since reached a stalemate.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, China is reportedly raising new militia units comprising local Tibetan youth, to be deployed in Eastern Ladakh.<\/li>\n<li>China\u2019s misadventure in Ladakh exposed certain shortfalls with regard to the mechanization of China\u2019s People\u2019s Liberation Army (PLA).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, blame for such miscalculations is being attributed to Mr. Xi as he has concentrated power in his hands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why could be the possible reason for the rise in misadventure from China&#8217;s side?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Firstly, in past also China acted in a similar erratic manner.\n<ul>\n<li>In the late 1950s and 1960s China faced the worst famines due to the misadventure of the <strong>Great Leap Forward Movement. <\/strong>It put <strong>Mao<\/strong> Tse Tung\/Mao Zedong in a difficult situation.<\/li>\n<li>Rather than accepting his mistake, he embarked on his campaign to attack India.<\/li>\n<li>Mao\u2019s actions were intended to divert attention and to counter those who were critical of Mao\u2019s autocratic attitude within CPC.<\/li>\n<li>Another instance of this kind <strong>is Deng Xiaoping\u2019s<\/strong> behaviour following the Tiananmen Square movement in the 1980s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Secondly, China\u2019s recent behaviour is due to <strong>growing inner-party criticism<\/strong> of Mr. Xi\u2019s policies and actions.\n<ul>\n<li>For instance, The Ladakh adventure was a misguided attempt by Mr. Xi to demonstrate to his opponents within the CPC that he is well and truly in command.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>CPC is a monolith entity,<\/strong> however, deep fissures exist within the party.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Thirdly, the <strong>accumulation of problems does produce in closed societies<\/strong> (such as China) a \u2018pressure cooker\u2019 syndrome, where the safety valve is often in the hands of the leadership.\n<ul>\n<li>However, the extent of inner-party tensions is little known to the world outside, given the opacity of Chinese society.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Fourth, the Chinese president is a <strong>leader in a hurry.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>He is seen as Mao&#8217;s clone; he seeks to achieve the same kind of dominance over the CPC as the latter.<\/li>\n<li>He has attempted to accelerate the pace at which China expects to overtake the U.S. as the world\u2019s number one superpower, which, however, seems to be stalling for a variety of reasons.<\/li>\n<li>Also, the Chinese leadership is concerned as the world is seemingly tilting towards India at this juncture, regarding it as more sophisticated, diplomatically, and more flexible compared to China.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Lastly, apart from this, several of Mr. Xi\u2019s other ideas have run into difficulties.\n<ul>\n<li>His plans to remake the <strong>global order<\/strong> on terms favourable to the CPC seem to have gone awry.<\/li>\n<li>The Chinese economy is showing signs of slowing down.<\/li>\n<li>Xi had been betting on technological prowess and economic heft to achieve the kind of geo-political transformation, but this is clearly not happening at present.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hence, India should expect, and prepare for more clashes with many more provocations coming from China.
