The Highest Yak Population is in Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It is followed by <\/strong>Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh and West Bengal and Uttarakhand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Importance of Himalayan Yak:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Himalayan Yak <\/strong>is a lifeline for pastoral nomads living in the higher reaches of the Himalayas as it provides them milk, fiber, and meat.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The long hair of yak <\/strong>has water-resistant properties and can be a good packing material. Nomads also use yak hair to weave material for making tents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Decline in Yak Population:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>According to a report, <\/strong>the number of yaks across the country has declined by almost 24.7% between 2012 and 2019.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The reasons include<\/strong> climate change, heat, diseases, surgical operations among others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What is being done now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>National Insurance Company Ltd <\/strong>will provide insurance for Himalayan Yak.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The insurance policy <\/strong>would shield the yak owners against the risks posed by weather calamities, diseases, in-transit mishaps, surgical operations and strikes or riots.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The owners <\/strong>of the Yaks would have to get their yaks ear-tagged and provide a proper description in order to get their animals insured.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The Hindu What is the News?
