{"id":117748,"date":"2021-07-10T20:13:05","date_gmt":"2021-07-10T14:43:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=117748"},"modified":"2021-07-12T19:22:04","modified_gmt":"2021-07-12T13:52:04","slug":"african-swine-fever-ripple-effect-across-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/african-swine-fever-ripple-effect-across-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"African swine fever: Ripple effect across the world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/news\/food\/african-swine-fever-ripple-effect-across-the-world-77851\"><strong>Down To Earth <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is the News?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The African Swine Fever(ASF) continues to impact livestock in Mizoram, affecting all 11 districts and killing 10,621 pigs since March 2021.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>About African Swine Fever:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>African swine fever(ASF) <\/strong>is a highly contagious hemorrhagic viral disease of domestic and wild pigs which is responsible for serious economic and production losses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Caused by: <\/strong>It is caused by a large DNA virus of the Asfarviridae family, which also infects ticks of the genus Ornithodoros.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Transmission: <\/strong>It is transmitted among pigs through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>direct contact with infected domestic or wild swines<\/li>\n<li>indirect contact through ingestion of contaminated substances or<\/li>\n<li>contaminated material such as food waste, feed, or garbage or through biological vectors such as ticks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Human Transmission:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>ASF is not a threat <\/strong>to human beings, since it only spreads from animals to other animals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ASF <\/strong>is a disease listed in the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Terrestrial Animal Health Code and must be reported to the OIE.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Treatment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>mortality is close to 100%<\/strong> and since the fever has no cure, the only way to stop its spread is by culling the pigs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Impact of African Swine Fever on Pork Production:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pork <\/strong>accounts for 35-40% of the global meat production. It is also a major source of protein, with an annual consumption of more than 110,000 tonnes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>China <\/strong>is the world\u2019s largest producer, consumer, and importer of pork. It is also the largest importer of soybean, which is used as feed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The mass culling of pigs <\/strong>due to African Swine Fever has not only disrupted the domestic as well the global pork trade. But it has also impacted the international market of animal feed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Moreover<\/strong>, the first victims of the African swine fever (ASF) outbreak are the small pig farm owners.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In India, <\/strong>over 70% of the pig farms are owned by small-scale farmers.
