The future course will be full of complexities and challenges post the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Background<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United States Armed Forces are scheduled to be withdrawn from Afghanistan by August 31, 2021.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Taliban are on the brink of capturing Afghanistan. They remain in contact with al Qaeda, as documented by a UN report earlier this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chaos the US leaves behind in Afghanistan for the second time in 30 years poses a <\/span><b>heightened risk of instability <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the entire region.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Why is the US leaving<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The withdrawal is the result of a bad deal made between the former US president (Donald Trump) and Taliban.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US had <\/span><b>already spent millions of dollars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but was unable to establish sustainable democracy in Afghanistan.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The war is <\/span><b>now unwinnable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it had been going on for too long and claimed too many American lives.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only success which the US can claim is elimination of Osama bin Laden (on Pakistani soil).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, as per Joe Biden (current US president), <\/span><b>nation-building was never an objective<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and this task should be undertaken by the Afghan people.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Future course of action for India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India now faces the prospects of dealing with the Taliban, largely a proxy of Pakistan, as a potentially powerful force in the neighborhood.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Fellow travellers such as the Haqqani network, Laskhar e Toiba and Jaish e Mohammed are waiting in the wings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delhi could either forget the collusion between Pakistan and Taliban, and incidents such as <\/span><b>the IC 814 hijack<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and do business with the Taliban, or\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The country must be ready to face a potentially destabilising force.
