{"id":11908,"date":"2019-11-25T18:22:45","date_gmt":"2019-11-25T12:52:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/factly.forumias.com\/?p=11908"},"modified":"2019-11-25T18:22:45","modified_gmt":"2019-11-25T12:52:45","slug":"no-relief-to-ro-companies-from-supreme-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/no-relief-to-ro-companies-from-supreme-court\/","title":{"rendered":"No relief to RO companies from Supreme Court"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> The\nSupreme Court has asked the RO Manufacturers Association to approach the\ngovernment on the National Green Tribunal&#8217;s order prohibiting the use of\nreverse osmosis (RO) purifiers where total dissolved solids (TDS) in water are\nbelow 500 mg per litre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Background: <\/strong>The\nNGT in its order on May 20 had directed the Ministry of Environment, Forests and\nClimate Change to frame rules for manufacturing and sale of RO filters, and\nbanned use of RO in areas where the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in water was\nalready low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key Concepts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Osmosis <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Osmosis\nis a phenomenon where water\/ solvent flows from a dilute (less concentrated)\nsolution through a semi permeable membrane to a higher concentrated solution. <\/li><li>Semi\npermeable means that the membrane will allow small molecules and ions to pass through\nit but acts as a barrier to larger molecules or dissolved substances.<\/li><li>Osmosis\nis a special case of diffusion. Diffusion is the movement of molecules from a\nregion of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/factly.forumias.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/RO1.gif?w=750\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11909\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reverse Osmosis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Reverse osmosis occurs when water moves through a semi-permeable membrane in the direction opposite to that for natural osmosis. This happens when the water is pushed under greater pressure than the osmotic pressure.<\/li><li><strong>Usage:<\/strong><ul><li>Boiler feed-water treatment: used to reduce solids content of waters prior to feeding into boilers for power generation or otherwise.<\/li><li>Desalinization: It is widely used to desalinate the sea water.<\/li><li>Used in wastewater industries and in many commercial industries to purify the water to get safe drinking water.<\/li><li>Used in beverage industry for concentrating the food liquids such as fruit juices.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/factly.forumias.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Ro2.jpg?w=750\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11910\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional Information:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Total dissolved solids (TDS):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It is\nthe term used to describe the inorganic salts and small amounts of organic\nmatter present in solution in water. <\/li><li>The\nprincipal constituents are usually calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium\ncations and carbonate, hydrogencarbonate, chloride, sulfate, and nitrate\nanions.<\/li><li>According\nto the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the upper limit of TDS level in water\nis 500 ppm.
