{"id":122309,"date":"2021-07-30T20:34:32","date_gmt":"2021-07-30T15:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=122309"},"modified":"2021-07-30T20:34:32","modified_gmt":"2021-07-30T15:04:32","slug":"intensity-of-severe-cyclonic-storms-increasing-in-the-north-indian-ocean-region-due-to-atmospheric-parameters-related-to-global-warming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/intensity-of-severe-cyclonic-storms-increasing-in-the-north-indian-ocean-region-due-to-atmospheric-parameters-related-to-global-warming\/","title":{"rendered":"Intensity of severe cyclonic storms increasing in the North Indian Ocean region due to atmospheric parameters related to global warming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Source<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1740252\">PIB<\/a><\/p>\n<h5><strong>About the news:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The intensity of severe cyclonic storms in the North Indian Ocean region has shown an increasing trend in the past four decades, says a recent study by Indian Scientists.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Why do we need to study the North Indian Ocean?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>impact of global warming<\/strong> due to climate change and its effect on extreme weather events such as frequency and high-intensity tropical cyclones formed over global ocean basins is a matter of concern.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Severe cyclonic storms have become more frequent in the North Indian Ocean<\/strong>, causing significant risk and vulnerability to the coastal regions.<\/li>\n<li>In the recent decade (2000 onwards), an <strong>increasing trend in cyclone formation was found to be quite substantial<\/strong> in both Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea basins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"background-color: #f2e9f1;\">\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\">Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/how-tropical-cyclones-are-formed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How Tropical cyclones are formed?<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"background-color: var(--global--color-background); color: var(--global--color-primary); font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">Key findings of the study related to North Indian Ocean:<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>increasing intensity of severe cyclonic storms with major socioeconomic implications was due to atmospheric parameters.\u00a0<\/strong>This includes parameters\u00a0like\n<ul>\n<li>Higher relative humidity (RH), especially at mid atmospheric level,<\/li>\n<li>Weak vertical wind shear (VWS)<\/li>\n<li>Positive low-level relative vorticity (RV)<\/li>\n<li>Suppressed outgoing long wave radiation<\/li>\n<li>Warm sea surface temperature (SST).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The study also found that the RH, RV, VWS are distinct during pre-monsoon seasons of La Ni\u00f1a, and that favors the <strong>genesis of severe cyclone formation<\/strong> over this region.<\/li>\n<li>Investigation of the <strong>role of additional parameters<\/strong> such as water vapour and zonal Sea Level Pressure gradients <strong>revealed the possible linkage of La Ni\u00f1a years on the increased severity of tropical cyclones<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The study reported an <strong>increased amount of water vapor content in the troposphere<\/strong>, and during the past 38 years at <strong>1.93 times as compared to the base year 1979<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>During the past two decades (2000-2020), the <strong>La Ni\u00f1a years experienced almost double the number of intense cyclones<\/strong> compared to the El Ni\u00f1o years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"background-color: #f2e9f1;\">\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\">Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/why-arabian-sea-is-transforming-into-a-new-cyclonic-hotbed-explained-pointwise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Why Arabian Sea is transforming into a New Cyclonic Hotbed?
