{"id":123986,"date":"2021-08-06T18:19:01","date_gmt":"2021-08-06T12:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=123986"},"modified":"2021-09-13T13:38:05","modified_gmt":"2021-09-13T08:08:05","slug":"chinas-border-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/chinas-border-games\/","title":{"rendered":"China&#8217;s border games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Source<\/strong>: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/opinion\/china-s-border-games-121080501740_1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Business Standard<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevance<\/strong>: China&#8217;s border strategy against India<\/p>\n<p><strong>Synopsis<\/strong>: China&#8217;s strategy of push and shove to solidify its position along the LAC requires bold and decisive action from India.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Recently, China\u2019s President made a three-day visit to Tibet.<\/li>\n<li>Featuring prominently in his programme was the Tibetan town of Nyingtri (or Nyingchi) which is of strategic interest to India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Strategic significance of Nyngchi to China<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Beijing claims that what India calls <strong>Arunachal Pradesh<\/strong> is actually Southern Tibet, a part of Nyingtri prefecture.\n<ul>\n<li>Nyingtri is a key <strong>crossroads in Beijing\u2019s plan to connect Tibet<\/strong> with China\u2019s bustling Sichuan province.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is central to Beijing\u2019s plan to <strong>connect the remote areas bordering India<\/strong> and to build massive dams on the Yarlung Tsangpo river system to generate hydropower for uses such as powering the electrified, high-speed, double track railway between Lhasa and Chengdu, Sichuan\u2019s capital.<\/li>\n<li>A bullet rail link from Lhasa to Nyngchi was inauguarated recently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"full-size\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s.greattibettour.com\/photos\/201811\/-nyingchi-prefecture-on-a-tibet-map--84815.jpg?w=750&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Nyingchi Maps: Tourist Attractions, Travel Routes, Counties Nearby\" \/> Map showing Nyingchi<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; background-color: #f7f2f2;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong>Must Read<\/strong>: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/tibet-gets-first-bullet-train-links-lhasa-to-india-border\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span id=\"Lhasa-Nyingchirail_line\"><b>Lhasa-Nyingchi rail line<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>What is China\u2019s Push and shove strategy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Using border villages to strengthen its territorial claims<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Such as <strong>coercing border villagers <\/strong>to occupy disputed border areas, usually high pasturelands, thereby <strong>solidifying China\u2019s territorial claims<\/strong> along the still disputed boundary with India and Bhutan and strengthening Beijing\u2019s geo-political position.<\/li>\n<li>These included driving yak herds over land grazed by Bhutanese herders in the <strong>Beyul<\/strong>, <strong>demanding tax payments from the Bhutanese herders<\/strong>, planting Chinese flags on peaks and painting the word \u2018China\u2019 on rocks throughout the area.<\/li>\n<li>In the face of this, the Bhutanese herders moved away, abandoning their traditional grazing grounds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Creating a network of quasi-militarised settlements<\/strong>: By implementing multiple intrusions across the disputed borders, Beijing has created a vast network of quasi-militarised settlements.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bhutan<\/strong>: Beijing\u2019s eyes are fixed on pockets of territory <strong>on Bhutan\u2019s western borders especially Doklam,<\/strong> from where the PLA could pose a military threat to <strong>India\u2019s Siliguri corridor.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Since 1990, Beijing has offered Bhutan a deal in which China would renounce its claim to Bhutanese territory Beyul, provided Bhutan cedes Doklam.<\/li>\n<li>When Bhutan declined Beijing\u2019s so-called package deal, China stepped up the pressure by beginning road construction in the Beyul in 2015.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"full-size\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/foreignpolicy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/china-bhutan-settlement-map-new.png?w=750&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"China Has Deployed a Quarter-Million Tibetans to Border Fortress Villages\" \/> Map showing Beyul<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>By October 2018, China had completed the construction of Gyalaphug, <strong>an entire village in the Beyul<\/strong>. Other villages and infrastructure followed as an estimated 250,000 Tibetans were resettled thus in vulnerable pockets along the border.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Threatening Indian graziers<\/strong>: China plays this game <strong>across the Line of Actual Control (LAC<\/strong>) with India, supporting its own yak graziers and threatening India\u2019s. The area across the Indus at Dungti, near Demchok in Southern Ladakh, which is claimed by India, is no longer visited by Ladakhi herders after several were beaten up by Chinese border guards.
