{"id":123991,"date":"2021-08-06T20:00:51","date_gmt":"2021-08-06T14:30:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=123991"},"modified":"2021-08-11T16:15:27","modified_gmt":"2021-08-11T10:45:27","slug":"kerala-has-highest-share-of-elderly-in-population-bihar-lowest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/kerala-has-highest-share-of-elderly-in-population-bihar-lowest\/","title":{"rendered":"Kerala has highest share of elderly in population, Bihar lowest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/india\/kerala-has-highest-share-of-elderly-in-population-bihar-lowest\/articleshow\/85088230.cms#:~:text=NEW%20DELHI%3A%20Kerala%2C%20as%20per,according%20to%20a%20government%20report.\">TOI<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>What is the News?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation(MOSPI) has released a report titled \u201cElderly in India 2021\u201d.The report is based on the findings of the Technical Group on Population Projections for India and States for 2011-2036.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Key Findings of the Elderly in India 2021 Report:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-124076\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Elderly.png?resize=750%2C654&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Elderly in India 2021\" width=\"750\" height=\"654\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Elderly.png?w=804&amp;ssl=1 804w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Elderly.png?resize=300%2C262&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Elderly.png?resize=768%2C670&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Growth of Elderly Population:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The general population<\/strong> has grown by 12.4% during 2011-2021 in comparison to around 18% in the earlier decade.<\/li>\n<li><strong>On the other hand, <\/strong>the elderly population has grown by 36% in each of the last two decades (2001-2011 and 2011-2021).<\/li>\n<li>A high growth rate in the elderly population compared to the general population was also observed earlier in the two decades between 1961 and 1981.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reasons<\/strong>: The growth in the elderly population has been attributed to the longevity of life achieved because of economic well-being, better healthcare and medical facilities and reduction in fertility rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"background-color: #f2e9f1;\">\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\">Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/govt-launched-seniorcare-ageing-growth-engine-sage-initiative-and-sage-portal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Govt launched (Seniorcare Ageing Growth Engine) \u201cSAGE Initiative and SAGE Portal\u201d<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h5><strong>State Wise Elderly Population:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>As per 2021 data,<\/strong> Kerala has the maximum proportion (16.5%) of elderly people in its population.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It was followed by <\/strong>Tamil Nadu (13.6%), Himachal Pradesh (13.1%), Punjab (12.6%) and Andhra Pradesh (12.4%).<\/li>\n<li><strong>The proportion of the Elderly Population<\/strong> is the least in Bihar (7.7%) followed by Uttar Pradesh (8.1%) and Assam (8.2%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"background-color: #f2e9f1;\">\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong>Read more<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/keralas-bell-of-faith-scheme-for-elderly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kerala\u2019s \u201cBell of Faith Scheme\u201d for elderly<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Future Projections:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The projections for 2031<\/strong> show that Kerala will have the maximum proportion (20.9%) of elderly people in its population.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It will be followed by<\/strong> Tamil Nadu (18.2%), Himachal Pradesh (17.1%), Andhra Pradesh (16.4%) and Punjab (16.2%), according to the report.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Old-Age Dependency Ratio:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The old-age dependency ratio <\/strong>provides a clearer picture of the number of persons aged 60-plus per 100 persons in the age group of 15-59 years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>According to the report,<\/strong> an increasing trend has been observed in the old-age dependency ratio.
