CJI&#8217;s remarks should expedite steps to stop custodial torture.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Introduction:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Recently, the CJI observed that Custodial violence and other police atrocities still prevail in our society despite various constitution safeguards. Further, the Ministry of Home Affairs has reported that 348 custodial deaths and 1,189 cases of torture by the police were reported in the last 3 years alone.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\">Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/threat-to-human-rights-is-highest-in-police-stations-cji\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Threat to human rights is highest in police stations: CJI<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Constitutional Provisions to protect people from custodial torture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Article 20 (3): says that no person \u201cshall be compelled to be a witness against himself\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Article 21:\u00a0 Provides protection of life and liberty.<\/p>\n<p>Similar provisions have also been provided in IPC and CrPC to protect individuals but they are not relevant to the present time.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Problems with these provisions:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>These provisions<strong> do not act as deterrence<\/strong> to police as they are backed by political parties.
