Its theme was \u201cEnhancing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/maritime-security-issues-explained-pointwise\/\"><b><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Maritime Security<\/span><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A Case For International Cooperation\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being the current chairman of UNSC, India urged the Global community to focus on maritime security and develop a common framework to deal with it. India\u2019s emphasis is rooted in its geography and ancient maritime traditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Maritime Traditions<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has a long coastline and large island chains spread-eagled across the Indian Ocean. It has <\/span><b>a natural seaward orientation,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with key sea lanes of communication coursing through its surrounding seas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has<\/span><b> ancient maritime traditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well. In the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century, Vasco de Gama was piloted to the west coast of India from Zanzibar by a Gujarati seaman.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long before that, India\u2019s ancient mariners were trading with the old world. India\u2019s maritime trade existed with<strong> Mesopotamia<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>civilization<\/strong> 4,500 years ago. Further, Lothal was a key maritime centre of the <strong>Indus Valley civilization<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Buddhism<\/strong> and <strong>Hinduism<\/strong> spread to South-east Asia by the maritime route. Even Islam took the maritime route from India to South-east Asia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such traditions have ensured that India acts as a responsible maritime power.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>A responsible Maritime Power<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has <\/span><b>always called for peaceful settlement of maritime disputes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This idea is rooted in India\u2019s values of peace and non-violence.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, India gracefully accepted the award by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 2014 concerning the Indo-Bangladesh Maritime dispute. This helped the country to forge closer ties with Bangladesh.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The country has <\/span><b>promoted mutual cooperation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">among the maritime neighbours and extended a helping hand in times of distress.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>India\u2019s role as \u2018first responder\u2019 in the Indian Ocean, <\/b>whether in acting against piracy or providing relief after the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is well- documented.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Indian Air Force airlifted 30 tonnes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of relief material to Mauritius in August 2020 to contain an oil spill that threatened to engulf the island nation\u2019s pristine coast.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India now has <\/span><b>white shipping agreements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with several countries (<em>It is an agreement related to the exchange agreement between the navies of countries on the commercial ships on each others\u2019 oceanic territories)<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indian Navy\u2019s state-of-the-art Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region <\/span><b>(IFC-IOR)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based in Gurugram hosts officers from the United States, Japan, France, Australia and the United Kingdom.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Way Forward<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The countries should come forward and work in the spirit of the 5 principles given by the Indian PM in the UNSC meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, they should understand that<\/span><b> Freedom of navigation and unimpeded commerce are key to the spread of prosperity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
