The US and Pakistan responded by unleashing a religious jihad. These Jihads compelled Russia to withdraw in 1989.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The <strong>Pakistan army used the jihadi armies<\/strong> to gain control of Afghanistan and <strong>launched a proxy war against India<\/strong>, especially in the Punjab and Kashmir regions.<\/li>\n<li>The turbulence of the 1990s saw <strong>deepening conflicts between India and Pakistan.<\/strong> Both countries <strong>conducted nuclear weapon tests<\/strong>, and the Pak-backed Taliban rule was established in Afghanistan.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Al Qaeda<\/strong>, hosted by the Taliban, <strong>launched terror attacks against the US<\/strong> on September 11, 2001.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The<strong> US retribution brought an end to Taliban rule<\/strong> and compelled Pakistan to reconsider its policies.<\/li>\n<li>Further, after 2001, there has also been a <strong>significant expansion of the India-US strategic partnership<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>After the withdrawal of US<\/strong> forces under the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-doha-agreement-and-afghan-peace-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Doha Agreement<\/a>, <strong>Pakistan\u2019s Afghan policy regained its prime<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>The policy of the Taliban at present:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>After capturing Kabul, the Taliban leaders are mentioning the following policy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The foreigners will have all the right to leave.<\/li>\n<li>Taliban will protect the lives and properties of Afghan people.<\/li>\n<li>The Taliban have announced that there will be no witch hunt, and they will respect a peaceful transitional process of power.<\/li>\n<li>Further, the Taliban will also respect the rights of women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"background-color: #f2e9f1;\">\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong>Read more<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/afghan-peace-process-and-india-explained-pointwise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afghan Peace Process and India \u2013 Explained, Pointwise<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h5><strong>Challenges with Taliban in power:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li>Taliban might renew the support for international terrorism.<\/li>\n<li>Pakistan might redirect the jihadi groups that fought with the Taliban towards India. This will require a major logistical effort.<\/li>\n<li>The government of India must also <strong>offer refuge to those Afghans who have worked with Indian initiatives<\/strong> and are desperate to avoid potential retribution from the Taliban<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6>Diplomatic initiatives<\/h6>\n<ol>\n<li>India must make <strong>all possible efforts to get the international community to hold the Taliban to its word<\/strong> on letting all foreigners leave with peace, protecting the lives of all Afghan citizens, and respecting international humanitarian law.<\/li>\n<li><strong>India also chairs the Taliban Sanctions Committee<\/strong> of the UNSC.
