An analysis<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>India has 16% of the world\u2019s population, but possesses only 4% of the world\u2019s freshwater resources. India is water-stressed due to changing weather patterns and repeated droughts. And the worst sufferers of this crisis are mostly women.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Extent of water stress in India<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>According to data from Central Ground Water Board, as many as <strong>256 of 700 districts in India have reported \u2018critical\u2019 or \u2018over-exploited\u2019 groundwater levels,<\/strong> which means the water table has significantly dropped in these districts<\/li>\n<li>India has become the <strong>world\u2019s largest extractor of groundwater<\/strong>, accounting for 25% of the total.<\/li>\n<li>70% of our water sources are contaminated, and our major rivers are dying because of pollution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Water crisis and women<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>This crisis of water puts women at a higher risk of vulnerability, since fetching water in India has been perceived as a woman\u2019s job for centuries. They need to walk miles to collect water from the nearest source. Water crisis impacts women in the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Affecting their participation in education, occupation<\/strong> <strong>and labor force<\/strong>, since they need to spend more time on water collection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Increasing marginalization<\/strong> since water crisis affects their access to toilets, leading to indignity and insecurity<\/li>\n<li><strong>Affects their labour force participation<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Promoting polygamy<\/strong>&#8211; there are increasing instances of polygamy in drought prone regions which is termed as <strong>\u2018water wives\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Reduces access to clean sanitation, better physical and mental health<\/strong> of women<\/li>\n<li>Leads to <strong>social oppression<\/strong> as it creates social issues like a lower level of literacy in women since many girls drop out of school to collect water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Way forward<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>It is important to make central and state policies dealing with the water crisis.
