{"id":127238,"date":"2021-08-19T18:21:59","date_gmt":"2021-08-19T12:51:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=127238"},"modified":"2021-08-20T16:56:33","modified_gmt":"2021-08-20T11:26:33","slug":"pineapple-agroforestry-systems-can-address-twin-challenges-of-climate-change-and-biodiversity-loss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/pineapple-agroforestry-systems-can-address-twin-challenges-of-climate-change-and-biodiversity-loss\/","title":{"rendered":"Pineapple Agroforestry Systems can Address Twin Challenges of Climate Change and Biodiversity Loss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Source: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1747115\"><b>PIB<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a study, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pineapple-based agroforestry can be a sustainable alternative to jhum cultivation for North East India.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Background:<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Jhum<\/i><\/b><b> cultivation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also called swidden agriculture is a dominant agricultural practice in the NorthEast Region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Under this,<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the farming community slashes secondary forests on a predetermined location, burns the slash and cultivates the land for a limited number of years.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>The land<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is then left fallow and the farming community moves to the next location to repeat the process till they return back to the starting point.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>However<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">practise has become unsustainable due to the reduced fallow cycle resulting in depletion in soil fertility, severe soil erosion and low agronomic productivity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Hence,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> North East India and many south Asian countries are shifting to agroforestry and high-value cropping systems from traditional jhum practices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>But the researchers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are looking for other agroforestry options that can provide twin solutions for climate change and biodiversity loss.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>What is the solution the researchers have found?<\/b><\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li><b>The researchers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the Pineapple-based agroforestry(PAFS) can be a sustainable alternative to jhum cultivation for North East India.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>This traditional practice <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can provide twin solutions for climate change and biodiversity loss.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><b>What is Pineapple agroforestry systems (PAFS)?<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Pineapple agroforestry systems (PAFS) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a dominant form of land use in the Indian Eastern Himalayas and other parts of Asia. It is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mostly grown in association with multipurpose trees.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>The ethnic &#8216;Hear&#8217; Tribe\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>in southern Assam<\/strong> have been cultivating pineapples for centuries.
