A brief look at the findings of ISRO&#8217;s report on the issue and causes behind it.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Recently, <strong>ISRO<\/strong> released the<strong> Desertification and Land Degradation Atlas of India,<\/strong> which highlighted that India is not on track to achieve its national commitment of land degradation neutrality.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is land degradation?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Land degradation within dry land regions (arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid regions) is termed as \u2018desertification\u2019.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Findings of the report<\/strong>:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>29.7% of India\u2019s total geographical area underwent <strong>land degradation<\/strong> during 2018-19<\/li>\n<li>Besides land degradation, <strong>desertification<\/strong> has also increased.\u00a0India witnessed an increase in the level of desertification in 28 of 31 states and Union territories between 2011-13 and 2018-19.<\/li>\n<li>Most of the degradation and desertification is contributed by <strong>Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Ladakh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh <\/strong>and <strong>Telangana<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>However, land degradation and desertification was declining in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana in 2018-2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; background-color: #f7f2f2;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong>Must Read:<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/desertification-and-land-degradation-atlas-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Desertification and land degradation Atlas of India<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Target<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>As a signatory to the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/international-conventions-and-organizations\/#9113_UNCCD_United_Nations_Convention_to_Combat_Desertification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification<\/strong><\/a><\/span> in Paris signed on June 17, 1994, while speaking at the UN High-Level Dialogue on Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought, Modi had added that India is working to restore 26 mha of degraded land by 2030<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Causes behind land degradation and desertification<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Loss of soil cover<\/strong>&#8211; Loss of soil cover, mainly due to rainfall and surface runoff, was one of the biggest reasons for desertification. According to the atlas, it was responsible for 11% of the desertification in the country<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water erosion<\/strong>&#8211; it was responsible for 10.98% of desertification in the country in 2011-13<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vegetation degradation<\/strong>&#8211; it found to be responsible for around 9% of desertification in the country<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wind erosion<\/strong>&#8211; it found to be responsible for around 5% of the desertification in India<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: Down to Earth Relevance: Causes behind increase in land degradation and desertification Synopsis: Problem of land degradation and desertification is increasing in India.
