{"id":127769,"date":"2021-08-21T18:47:43","date_gmt":"2021-08-21T13:17:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=127769"},"modified":"2021-08-22T08:36:28","modified_gmt":"2021-08-22T03:06:28","slug":"moplah-rebellion-a-manifestation-of-talibani-mindset-rss-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/moplah-rebellion-a-manifestation-of-talibani-mindset-rss-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"Moplah rebellion a manifestation of Talibani mindset: RSS leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Source:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/moplah-rebellion-among-the-first-manifestations-of-talibani-mindset-says-bjps-ram-madhav-7461234\/\"><b> Indian Express<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, an RSS leader has claimed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the Moplah rebellion, also known as the Mappila riots of 1921 was one of the first manifestations of the Taliban mindset in India.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>About Moplah Rebellion:<\/b><\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/moplah-rioters-not-freedom-fighters-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malabar Rebellion<\/a> (also called the Mappila or Moplah Rebellion by the British) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was an armed revolt by the Mappila Muslims of Kerala in 1921.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Background:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><b>The arrival of Portuguese:<\/b><\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li><b>In the 16th Century, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when Portuguese traders arrived at the Malabar coast, they noted the Mappilas to be a mercantile community concentrated in urban centres and fairly segregated from the local Hindu population.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>However,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the rise in Portuguese commercial power, the Mappilas found themselves a competitor and increasingly started moving inland in search of new economic opportunities.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>The shifting <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the Mappilas led to a clash of religious identities, both with the local Hindu population and the Portuguese.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><b>Causes of the Rebellion:<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><b>End of Tipu Sultan Rule and Tenancy Laws:<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><b>During the invasions of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the local Hindu population in Malabar found themselves attacked and uprooted, thereby maintaining a sense of security for the Mappilas.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>However, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soon after when the British took over, the domination of the Hindu upper castes was not just re-established but also heightened.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>In this scenario, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the British\u00a0<strong>introduced new tenancy laws<\/strong> that tremendously favoured the Hindu landlords known as Janmis and instituted a far more exploitative system for peasants than before.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Non-Cooperation and Khilafat Movement:<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>The trigger of the Malabar uprising <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">came from the Non-Cooperation Movement launched by Congress in 1920 along with the Khilafat agitation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>The anti-British sentiment <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fuelled by these agitations affected the Muslim Mapillahs(also known as Moplahs) of the South Malabar region of Kerala.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Malabar Revolt:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The revolt was started as a resistance against the British colonial rule, the prevailing feudal system and in favour of the Khilafat Movement, but ended in communal violence between Hindus and Muslims.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><b>British Government Response:<\/b><\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The British government responded to the movement with much aggression, bringing in Gurkha regiments to suppress it and imposing martial law.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A noteworthy event of the British suppression was the <\/span><b>wagon tragedy <\/b>w<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hen approximately 60 Mappila prisoners, on their way to prison, suffocated to death in a closed railway goods wagon.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: Indian Express What is the News?
