It is a luminous phenomenon in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ocean,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which large areas of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seawater<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appear to glow <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">translucently<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (in varying <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shades of blue)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Such occurrences glow <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brightly enough at night to be visible from satellites orbiting Earth.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><b>Reason for the Milky Sea Effect:<\/b><\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Till now,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only one research vessel has encountered a milky sea. That crew collected samples and found a strain of luminous bacteria (called <\/span><b>Vibrio harveyi<\/b>) <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colonizing algae at the water\u2019s surface.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Purpose of the Glow: <\/b>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luminous bacteria cause the particles to glow when they colonize. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers also think that the purpose of this glow could be to attract fish that eat them. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These bacteria thrive in the guts of fishes, so when their populations get too big for their main food supply, a fish\u2019s stomach makes a great second option.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Example:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you go into a refrigerated fish locker and turn off the light, you may notice that some fish emit a greenish-blue glow \u2013 this is bacterial light.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>The instrument used for detecting Milky Sea Effect:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Day\/Night Band: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are new constellations of satellites planned for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
