What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Press Information Bureau, Shillong has held a virtual discussion on \u2018Unsung Heroes of Meghalaya\u2019 as part of the nationwide celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.<\/span><\/p>\n

Important Unsung Heroes of Meghalaya:<\/b><\/h5>\n

U Tirot Sing Sylem:<\/b><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. U Tirot Sing was <\/b>born in the year 1802 <\/b>and died in the year 1835. He was one of the chiefs of the <\/span>Khasi people<\/span> in the early 19th century.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. He declared war <\/b>and fought against the British for attempts to take over control of the Khasi Hills.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    U Sib Charan Roy:<\/b><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. U Sib Charan Roy <\/b>was a Nationalist and socio-religious reformer, born in 1862 in Sohra, Meghalaya. He was the eldest son of Babu Jeebon Roy, the \u2018Father of modern Khasis\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. He joined government service <\/b>in 1891 as an A.S.I of police. But, he grew disgusted with the oppressive measures resorted by the British Government. Subsequently, he resigned from Government service in 1892.<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. He joined the Indian National Congress in 1920<\/b> and was the only Khasi who attended the famous \u2018Lahore Session\u2019 of 1929<\/strong> and had seen the flag hosting and demand for \u2018Purna Swaraj\u2019 (complete independence) by the Congress.<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. He started a monthly paper<\/b> \u2018U Nongphira\u2019 (watchman).<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. Furthermore, he knew Sanskrit and translated the <\/span>Hindu religious book \u2018Bhagavad Gita\u2019 into the Khasi language.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      U Kiang Nangbah:<\/b><\/h5>\n
        \n
      1. U Kiang Nangbah <\/b>was a Khasi freedom fighter from Meghalaya who led an uprising against the British.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      2. He was hanged by the British <\/b>publicly at Iawmusiang in Jowai town in West Jaintia Hills district in 1862.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      3. A postage stamp <\/b>was issued by the Government of India to commemorate him in 2001. A government college was also opened at Jowai in 1967 in his honour.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
