{"id":129925,"date":"2021-08-30T20:24:15","date_gmt":"2021-08-30T14:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=129925"},"modified":"2021-09-01T17:58:13","modified_gmt":"2021-09-01T12:28:13","slug":"the-purpose-of-literature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-purpose-of-literature\/","title":{"rendered":"The purpose of literature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<strong>Source: <\/strong>This post is based on the article &#8220;The purpose of literature&#8221; published in The Hindu on 30th August 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevance: <\/strong>To understand the value of Indian literature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Synopsis: <\/strong>It is through inclusive and diverse writing that we get a socio-cultural understanding of the nation.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Introduction<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Recently, Delhi University dropped Mahasweta Devi\u2019s renowned short story \u201cDraupadi\u201d &amp; two Dalit writers \u201cBama &amp; Sukirtharani\u201d from their BA Hons syllabus.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What should be the purpose of literature?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>To understand who we are, or ought to be, as people.<\/li>\n<li>To understand where and how we live and the challenges that our time and society face.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To understand literature better, all over the world, the literature syllabus is being redrawn to ensure inclusion and diversity.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is special about writings that have been removed?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li>Draupadi\u2014It details the hardships of the tribals, which still exist in today\u2019s world.<\/li>\n<li>Bama\u2019s Karakku: It gives a brief about subjugation, caste oppression &amp; exclusion from society.<\/li>\n<li>Sukirtharani poems: It\u2019s about Dalit feminist politics.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These are the important writings that highlight concerns that help us in getting a socio-cultural understanding of the issues that plague Indian society. These kinds of writings help us to encourage critical questioning &amp; thinking among young minds.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What should be done before removing any such writings?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>There should be proper scrutiny by the experts.<\/li>\n<li>Proper reasoning why the particular text is chosen to be removed.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that there is no political interference\/pressure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Previous instances<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>This is not the first time such incidents have happened. There are many examples where such writings have been dropped from the university syllabus. The prominent ones are,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>AK Ramanujan&#8217;s <\/strong>Three hundred Ramayanas<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rohinton Mistry&#8217;s <\/strong>A fine balance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Way forward<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>We should focus on Indian literature along with world literature.<\/li>\n<li>An introduction to Indian writing will go a long way in creating passionate learners and critical thinkers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: This post is based on the article &#8220;The purpose of literature&#8221; published in The Hindu on 30th August 2021.
