{"id":130837,"date":"2021-09-02T20:04:28","date_gmt":"2021-09-02T14:34:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=130837"},"modified":"2021-09-04T16:30:42","modified_gmt":"2021-09-04T11:00:42","slug":"missing-the-woods-18-of-indias-2603-tree-species-threatened-with-extinction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/missing-the-woods-18-of-indias-2603-tree-species-threatened-with-extinction\/","title":{"rendered":"Missing the woods: 18% of India\u2019s 2,603 tree species threatened with extinction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Source<\/strong>: This post is based on the article<strong> &#8220;<span lang=\"EN-US\">Missing the woods: 18% of India\u2019s 2,603 tree species threatened with extinction<\/span>&#8220;<\/strong> published in <strong>Down to Earth<\/strong> on <strong>2nd September 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is the news?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>According to <strong>the <em>State of the World\u2019s Trees<\/em><\/strong> report, released by London-based Botanic Gardens Conservation International, some 469 of India\u2019s 2,603 tree species (18%) are threatened with extinction.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Findings <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Firstly<\/strong>, about a third of the tree species found in the<strong> Indo-Malaya (Tropical Asia) biogeographic realm<\/strong> of which India is a part, have not been evaluated and <strong>data<\/strong> about them is <strong>deficient.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Secondly<\/strong>, other than Indo-Malaya and <strong>Oceania<\/strong>, the<strong> Afrotropics<\/strong> (Africa south of the Sahara, including Madagascar) have the highest proportion of threatened tree species.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thirdly, the Palearctic and Nearctic<\/strong> (North America) realms mostly have tree species that are <strong>not threatened.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fourthly, the Neotropics<\/strong> (Central and South America) have the largest number of tree species with 23,631 tree species. Indo-Malaya is second and the Afrotropics have 9,237 species. The Nearctic and Oceania have the lowest number of tree species.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fifthly<\/strong>, the researchers found that<strong> 142 of the world\u2019s tree species have become extinct.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sixthly,<\/strong> among countries,<strong> Brazil, China, Colombia and Indonesia<\/strong> had many tree species as well as many threatened species. Madagascar is one of the countries with the highest number of threatened trees.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What are the threats to the trees?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Threats to tree species, as listed in the report, includes:<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture (29%), logging (27%), livestock farming (14%), residential and commercial development (13%), fire and fire suppression (13%), energy production and mining (9%), wood and pulp plantations (6%), invasive and other problematic species (5%) and climate change (4%).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: This post is based on the article &#8220;Missing the woods: 18% of India\u2019s 2,603 tree species threatened with extinction&#8220; published in Down to Earth on 2nd September 2021.
