{"id":132119,"date":"2021-09-07T17:27:48","date_gmt":"2021-09-07T11:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=132119"},"modified":"2021-09-08T15:10:49","modified_gmt":"2021-09-08T09:40:49","slug":"out-of-africa-flashback-is-the-world-witnessing-a-migration-wave-due-to-lack-of-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/out-of-africa-flashback-is-the-world-witnessing-a-migration-wave-due-to-lack-of-water\/","title":{"rendered":"Out of Africa flashback: Is the world witnessing a migration wave due to lack of water?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>What is the news?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A recent World Bank report titled\u00a0<em>Web and Flow: Water, Migration and Development<\/em>,\u00a0analysed the \u201clargest dataset on internal migrants\u201d assembled from 64 countries and 189 censuses during 1960-2015.<\/p>\n<p>Findings are listed below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the findings of the report?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Firstly,<\/strong> the report argues that water scarcity is a major reason for <strong>internal migration<\/strong> in the contemporary world.\u00a0 The recent anthropogenic changes have made us more prone to water scarcity than five million years ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Secondly, low rainfall events<\/strong> account for 10-11% of the increase in migration between 1970 and 2000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thirdly,<\/strong> the water scarcity-driven waves of migration have been <strong>more eminent in developing and poor countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fourthly,<\/strong> while dry spells or lack of water ranked just below education as a reason for migration, in many countries, this has become a more decisive driver of migration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fifthly,<\/strong> in the last three decades, an average 25% of the world\u2019s population suffered abnormal rainfalls annually.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sixthly, increasing dry spells,<\/strong> as predicted in a changed climate scenario, would fasten the rate of migration. The <strong>poorest in a region would be left behind<\/strong> to fend for themselves in areas ravaged by deficit rainfalls.
