It can also replace diesel in Railways and could be an ideal complement to Hybrid and Electric Mobility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Methanol can also be used to generate di-methyl ether (DME), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a liquid fuel that is very similar to diesel \u2014 existing diesel engines simply need to be minimally changed to use DME instead of diesel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the benefits of using Methanol?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b>Methanol burns efficiently<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in all internal combustion engines, produces no particulate matter, no soot, almost nil SOX and NOX emissions (NEAR ZERO POLLUTION).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To adopt Methanol as a transport fuel requires <\/span><b>minimal infrastructure modifications <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>and capital<\/strong> both in vehicles and in terminal and distribution infrastructure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methanol <\/span><b>15% blend (M15) in petrol will reduce pollution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by 33% &amp; diesel replacement by methanol will reduce by more than 80%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How Methanol is produced?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Methanol can be produced from a variety of feedstocks like <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural Gas, Coal (Indian High Ash Coal), Biomass, Municipal Solid waste and most importantly from CO2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The majority of worldwide methanol production <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is derived from natural gas, which is a relatively easy process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Challenges associated with methanol production in India<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>India doesn\u2019t have much of natural gas reserves. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, producing methanol from imported natural gas leads to outflow of foreign exchange and is sometimes uneconomical due to excessive prices of natural gas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The next best option is to utilise <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India&#8217;s abundant coal. However, due to the <strong>high ash percentage of Indian coal<\/strong>, most internationally accessible technology will not be adequate for our demands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>India\u2019s Initiatives to increase Methanol Production<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NITI Aayog&#8217;s <\/span><b>&#8216;Methanol Economy&#8217; programme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is aimed at reducing India&#8217;s oil import bill, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and converting coal reserves and municipal solid waste into methanol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Bureau of Indian Standards has notified 20% of DME blending with LPG<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a notification for other blends has been issued.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Railways is working towards blending methanol<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the range of 5-2% through direct fuel injection in locomotives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In 2018, Assam Petrochemicals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> launched Asia&#8217;s<\/span><b> first canister-based methanol <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cooking fuel programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Five methanol plants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on high ash coal, five DME plants, and one natural gas-based methanol production plant with a capacity of 20 MMT\/annum in a joint venture with Israel, have been <strong>planned<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This post is based on the article<\/span> <b>\u201c<\/b><b>BHEL demonstrates tech to create methanol from high ash coal<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> PIB <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on<\/span><b> 9th September 2021.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the news?
