{"id":133328,"date":"2021-09-11T18:35:03","date_gmt":"2021-09-11T13:05:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=133328"},"modified":"2021-09-13T18:45:24","modified_gmt":"2021-09-13T13:15:24","slug":"no-new-coal-plants-needed-to-meet-2030-demand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/no-new-coal-plants-needed-to-meet-2030-demand\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018No new coal plants needed to meet 2030 demand\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a report <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prepared by <strong>EMBER<\/strong>, an independent British energy think-tank in collaboration with Bangalore-based<strong> Climate Risk Horizons<\/strong>, <strong>India does not require additional new coal capacity<\/strong> to meet expected demand growth by the financial year 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Key Findings of the report<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>India does not require additional new coal capacity to meet expected demand growth by Financial Year(FY) 2030:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if India\u2019s power demand grows 5% annually(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as per projections made by the <\/span><b>Central Electricity Authority<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, demand for coal-fired generation in FY 2030 will be lower than in FY 2020 as long as India achieves its non-coal generation targets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>India can meet its peak demand in FY 2030 without building the \u201czombie\u201d coal plants: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The country&#8217;s peak power demand would reach 301 GW by FY 2030. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s planned solar capacity can cover much of it. Therefore, adding new coal plants will lead to \u201czombie\u201d units.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Note: Zombie units<\/strong> refer to the <strong>ones which will exist, but not be operational<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>India<\/b> <b>can free up Rs.2.5 lakh crore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in capital expenditure by not investing in \u201czombie\u201d coal projects.
