Introduction<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Regarding two-wheeler electrification in India, things are in the right direction.<\/span> And their sales in India are likely to at least double in 2021 compared with 2020 levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But even if that happens, Electric 2-Wheelers (E2Ws) will account for less than 1% of new two-wheeler sales. \u00a0 This is due to the fact that most of the industry leaders in the two-wheeler segment are showing reluctance in offering electric vehicles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the present scenario wrt E2Ws in India?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Presently, several things are going right for the electric two wheeler electrification in India.<\/p>\n

First,<\/strong> the government has increased the FAME-II incentives for electric two-wheelers (E2W) to \u20b915,000\/kWh. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second,<\/strong> more States such as Gujarat\u00a0and Maharashtra have announced\u00a0State-level electric vehicle incentives\u00a0as part of their\u00a0state\u00a0policies.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Third,<\/strong>\u00a0many startups are launching new\u00a0electric two-wheeler models.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite all that, two wheeler manufacturers are dsiplaying hesitance in pushing E2Ws in the market.<\/p>\n

How we can overcome\u00a0reluctance?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

We can overcome this problem in two ways. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

E<\/strong>stablish a zero\u00a0emission vehicles (ZEV) credit\u00a0programme.<\/b><\/span>\u00a0This requires manufacturers of vehicles to ensure that either a\u00a0certain fraction of their sales are\u00a0ZEVs or that they purchase ZEV credits from manufacturers who have\u00a0sold more ZEVs than required by the\u00a0credit\u00a0programme.\u00a0India can set up such\u00a0programme\u00a0through regulatory approaches. California and several U.S.\u00a0States as well as China have used\u00a0such an approach.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stringent standards<\/strong>: If CO2<\/sub> standards are sufficiently stringent, mainstream manufacturers can introduce electric vehicles in meaningful numbers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the advantages of using E2Ws?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

E2W\u00a0are cost effective<\/strong> on total cost of ownership basis today, and likely to\u00a0reach upfront cost parity later this\u00a0decade. <\/span><\/p>\n

E2W will reduce greenhouse gas emissions.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It\u00a0will also pave the way for India to\u00a0transition completely to E2W<\/strong> across\u00a0all two-wheeler segments by 2035.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
